I use 20 mm ply board on my wood working vice, and make 10 mm ply jaws with 15 mm cork glued on for my other vices a heavy duty record 34 and my favourite a Parkinson ball vice great for wood working and gripping well
I use to use cillit bang but it quite harsh and eats metal if left to soak for too long, now tend to remove rus via mechanical means

Was lucky to get on eBay brand new never used fairly cheap - more expensive than my graduate lathe - but I got that very cheaply
I have chiselled them out - very brittle horrible to do flys all over the place and very sharp shards will give it a go with a heat gun next time thanks for the tip
