    Drill Sharpening

+1 for Drill Doctor, took a bit of getting used to, but does the job. Eclipse 39 drill sharpeners work, all be it slowly, best used on nearly blunt, rather than well rounded. Bod

    Random machinery restoration questions (ongoing)

Keep as original. For really fouled Whitworth threads, there are Helicoil kits for Whitworth. Whitworth spanners are really cheap and usually available from carboot sales. Taps and dies are much the same. (Co-incidentally these spanner/tap/dies are usually good quality, as the poorer quality...

    75 or 90 bullnose pane?

It's the lever cap, that I have found broken on several 2nd hand examples. The hole in the body that both it and the blade pass through is 1/2 inch in diameter. Take a 1/2 inch rod, cut down length ways to make a semi circular section, file to fit with blade in place, shape the nose to deflect...

    75 or 90 bullnose pane?

75 or 90? Definitely 90, or better still 92 or 93. Don't worry to much if the blade clamp is missing or broken, a servicable one can easily be made from a short length of 1/2 inch diameter rod. Bod

Moving workshop/transporting machines - any tips??

Polystyrene packing between machines, and van sides, to reduce/prevent moving and contact. Builders merchants sell 8x4 sheet of the stuff, inch thick should be ok. Asking at motorcycle shops might be useful as there is/was a lot packed around new boxed motorcycles, and was always a pain to get...

Silk purse from a sow's ear? Any advice?

Record used 2" blades in the later T5 planes, aimed at the schools market. I fear a Record replacement will be hard to find. Some No.4 smoothers also used 2" blades. Bod.

Advice on buying an emergency generator

https://petepowerblog.wordpress.com/ Read this, the guy knows generators. You will need an installed generator connection, or you will try to power up the entire street! With modern petrol you will get major problems with "rubber" seals and carboretter jets gumming up. Seriously consider LPG...

Old tools from eBay or brand new tools to start

https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/silk-purse-or-pigs-ear.123175/#post-1361162 This is a thread that I started a while back, covering trying to get a cheap plane to work. the only thing to really add to it was to flatten the blade back, to get a proper sharp edge. Bod

Old tools from eBay or brand new tools to start

Is there a "Men's Shed" near you? If so go along there will almost certainly be someone who can at least show you what to do with your tools to get the best from them. Bod

Please help find a right pillar drill/ drill press/ drill stand for me

How many holes are you expecting to do? What sort of diameter? 1 or 2 off, an old fashioned Brace and Bit will do the job easily. 100 or 200, then explore different methods/drill bits. Could the hole be made in larger size wood, then the finished size taken from the hole, where ever it is. Bod

Any experience of Willis Economiser Immersion Heater?

The Willis heater is designed to provide a small amount of hot water, for showers, hand washing etc. To heat the full tank a pump would be needed. Check the lenght of the thermostat fitted, it may be a short one, in a long tube, is there a "Bath/Basin" switch fitted? If you have enough "spare"...

    AVO meter repairs.

This is an AVO model 8 Mk V serial number 0013956 or 8 The glass is intact, and in the correct place. I've seen a U-tube that states that if the meter has had a heavy knock, the hair spring can get caught. This meter has a frozen needle, I'm hoping it's a simple fix. Bod

Any experience of Willis Economiser Immersion Heater?

I cannot see that working for you, plumbed as shown. Can you fit a longer immersion heater? Does the HW tank have a spare internal heating coil? It is possible to fit a lower heater in a standard HW tank, using an "Essex flange"(think thats the right name, but does exist.) Bod

    AVO meter repairs.

I have been given an AVOMETER 8, nice condition, last calibrated in 1998 by RS servicepoint, battery compartment in reasonable condition. The RS "Intergrity seal" is still intact. It does'nt work, needle appears to be seized. Now I know it will be cheaper to replace with a digital meter, than to...
