    Havin' a hard time

For that type of turning a gouge is not the ideal tool. I`ll post some piccies tomorrow of a couple of easily made home made tools and some commercial ones also that are ideal for that type of turning, and they remove wood fast. What you need to do is hollow the vase in stages bringing each...

    Self Centering Dowel Jigs

I have the excellent Record jig. Here`s a slightly diffrent application for the tool. I used it to accurately drill the 1/4" holes for the tuners of the mandolins I finished building last year. I used the the tuners themselves to setup the jig first.

    Copy Lathe

I bought one from www.rockler.com in the states. I believe is costs $229 at the moment. Very heavy sturdy well made piece of kit. Really comes into it`s own if you have a lot of spindles to make or you want exact copies. Be prepared for a lot of sanding though. Minimum centre height of lathe is...

    japanese saw at lidl

Well, I`ll make good use of the steel blade when it does eventually become blunt. I just hate this throw away world we live in. :( That does`nt mean I don`t like living though.

    japanese saw at lidl

I got one yesterday at my Great Yarmouth store. They`ve got about fifty left. Are these hard point saws ? I hate tools you have to throw away when there`re blunt. If not, how do you sharpen them ?

    using English Cherry

No need to grain fill Cherry. Any solid finish will build very quickly and It`ll take a nice oil finish as well. Cherry is difficult to get an even stain though. Thats why Norm uses gel stains. Wish we had more of those products here.

How to make a barley twist

Thanks for all the nice comments. Niel, it took me about four and half hours to make. In actual fact this is te second one I`ve ever made. I must be a natural. Alf,Offcut, you`ve given me double clap. :D If anyone is serious about doing some of this in a future project, I learnt how to do it...

How to make a barley twist

Just finished making a barley twist replacement chair stretcher for Dom Vilente, thought I`d document the process for the benefit of the members. He sent me some white oak for the job as the rest of the chair is made in oak. Right, to start with here`s a photo of the tools I used for the job...

Long case arched dial clock WIP

Some more progress in this clock building saga. Below a side is being glued and clamped to the waist front frame. You`ll notice I have used home made right angled brackets to hold the sides square while the glue goes off. The waist mouldings are being mitred here. I cut just shy of the line so...

    COMP063 Steve Maskery - Mirror

Steve, The goldie colour is a mixture of yellow and amber water stain. The stains I used are ColorTone which I obtained from Stewart Macdonalds Guiter Supply in the states. They`ve stopped shipping it outside the states now so even though It`s water based it must still be flamable. The sunburst...

Well I received three of the Ryobi power tools I selected from thier catalogue for my winning entry in the Woodworker mag Woodworker Of The Year 2005 competition. I have a forth tool to follow later which is a workshop vacuum extractor. Here`s a reminder photo of the item that won me the...

What do mean, maple is not made for bending. Look at the tight bend at the scroll on this mandolin I made. And the maple is curly maple at that. No problem with my bend persuader shown earlier. The sides were 2mm thick as well 8)

Long case arched dial clock WIP

Tony, I thought that photo would cause some interest. The router is an American fixed base 1 1/2 HP Craftsman brand sold in the states by Sears Roebuck, which I purchased from a mail order catalogue some 25 years ago. I also purchased the attachment at the same time, it`s called a Trim A Form...

Long case arched dial clock WIP

I`ve been doing a little more on the clock today. I`ll soon be ready to glue the waist assembly. This is obviously the longest part of the clock assembly so once this is out of the way, I will be dealing with much shorter boards for the base and hood assemblies. Much more manageable. Here I`m...

    Barley twist stretcher required

This is a practice piece I made a couple of years ago. It`s a single bine twist but I can also make twists with two, three, four bines etc.

    What biscuit joiner????????????

I bought a biscuit jointer from Screwfix a week ago, the Erbauer ERB900 £49.95 specially to use on my latest project, a long case clock. I did`t want to spend too much money on one because I`m mostly hooked on making musical stringed instruments now. I`ve found this tool to be a very good buy...

Long case arched dial clock WIP

Some more clock case building photos. Cleaning up the waist side boards with scraper plane and then sanding with random orbit sander. The top rail of the clock waist was marked with compass for the semi circular cut out and then cut on the bandsaw. I then drum sanded the curve on my small...

Long case arched dial clock WIP

Been doing some more clock building today. Secret_squiggle, yes I did buy the plans for this clock years ago. It was a project in Practical Woodworking magazine when that mag was great. It`s not a patch on what it was then. Anyway, just a few more photos, nothing meaty yet, that`ll come later...

Long case arched dial clock WIP

I`ve started work on a long case clock I`ve been meaning to build for about ten years now. The case is to replace a clock I made some twenty five years ago when I was just starting out in this woodworking hobby of ours. Although I made a fairly good job of making the clock, I made a lot of no...

    COMP063 Steve Maskery - Mirror

Hello Steve It`s an Ibex electric guitar side bending iron which I purchased from Craft Supplies Sound Wood catalogue. I`m mostly building stringed musical instruments now, but I have just started building a long case clock in American Cherry. I`m now going to start a thread covering the making...
