    Wood Supply - Sheffield area

If you're prepared to travel a bit, British Hardwoods in Keighley might be able to help. I've always found them very accommodating.

I'll be honest. In my view it reads like something an employee would write. As do the other posts in support, from Brian and Bob. You all have relatively low post counts and yes, I'm discriminating, because in all honesty, if a prolific forum user posted this, I'd be far more open to...

Air line fittings; is 1/4 BSP R or G?

Taper threads are "BSP R". Straight threads are "BSP G". It's annoying as hell and I went through this recently and got caught out (only £3 but....). The only way to be absolutely certain is to contact the relevant manufacturers. In all honesty, buy PCL stuff. Their technical support is...

    Sharpening a stiletto blade

Bit of an unusual one maybe. I normally send my knives off to the local sharpener as once i'm outside plane irons and chisels, I get a bit lost. I have an automatic stiletto knife (some would say flick knife/switchblade) which has a very fine bevel (0.1mm probably) on it. I can't give it to...

Why not buy from them, all their products are reviewed 4 or 5 stars so they must be good. =P~

What compelled you to post that here? Not having a dig, genuinely interested.

    Parkside Track Saw warning.

The shock here is not that this happened, its that you had warm weather today. It's been miserable as hell up here. Brass monkeys as we say in yorkshire!

    Cheap wood flooring recommendations?

Hi all, Hoping to move house in spring. Due to a recent leak we're going to have to replace some flooring. Been looking around and £28sqm seems to be the going rate for 3mm engineered oak strip stuff. For this sort of price range or preferably lower, does anyone have a supplier they'd...

    Practical tips for beginners.

There are lots of universal truths in woodworking and also a lot of opinion. A rank beginner shouldn't necessarily be presented with 20 options on how to accomplish something, because they lack the knowledge to be able to decide which is the most appropriate and may misunderstand. Initially, a...

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Thanks Matt. The splines were done with a mitre saw and chisel. With hindsight, I wish I'd made them thicker but hopefully they will do the job.

    Joinery Preservation

For those of us that aren't familiar with this process, would you mind describing why it's done? It's a form of pressure treatment, I understand that, but I didnt realise it was possible to do this on a smallish scale. :)

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Finally finished this little C shape table that I've been working on periodically for ages now. Now it's done, I'm not sure I like the design.......oh well, practice makes perfect.

    Festool FSZ 120 clamps

The only time I've had them work loose is when I set them at the wrong angle which is impossible to do if being used in the rail slot. They are ratcheted so that sounds really strange. Definitely take them back for Festool to have a look.

    Little antique shop in Whitby

Wow thats a great buy. I use mine an awful lot for all kinds of jobs. Incredibly useful tools.

    Furniture from railway sleepers

Personally, before I embarked on this project with this material, my first task would be to check the moisture content of the timber I was looking at buying. If it's truly green oak, then you're truly opening a can of worms if you can only let it dry for 2 to 3 weeks. Jointing is a secondary...

Mitre Saw - what's going on with the cuts its making???

I had this exact problem with my Bosch saw when new. I have the GCM8 SJL. What blade did you buy to replace the (utter rubbish - mine went in the bin) standard one?

    Building my own worktop

Did you allow the wood to dry and acclimitise in your home before you built this? Nice job of jointing it though, certainly fits the space.

Oak wine rack - suggestions to stabilize?

Acrylic sheet perhaps? Cut a slot in the wood to the thickness of the acrylic at an angle and voila. Fairly unobtrusive stuff, acrylic is.

Do I need a shed base?

We had a couple of very friendly installers for our shed. One of them had obviously done a fair bit of woodwork as he pinged the fact the bench I was putting in the shed was properly jointed with M&T and they both did a really good accurate job. We discussed how best to rot proof the shed, the...
