    How to flatten boards

Save even more, Coopes, and send it to me - I'm even closer - 'bout half way 'twixt you and Cornwall  Trev.

The Midlands Show 23rd-25th April - EXHIBITORS LIST

Dave, Best wear a carnation (red) then and don't forget your copy of 'The Times' Or just turn up at the appointed place and time and say, loudly, "'Tis me, Dave of UKWorkshop fame," in case there are others there with beards and check shirts. That'll do the trick. Cheers...

    laquer

What sort of lacquer, Rich, and what are you looking to use it for? If you can enlarge a bit, I'm sure help will be forthcoming herein (although probably not from me 'cos I don't know much about the stuff). Trev.

    lesson learned

On the other hand I have just turned an oak bowl from a circular blank 14" diameter x 4" thick - now that would equate to loads of time and effort, together with a mountain of shavings, just to turn from a square to the round to get started! So, depends what you are starting with I...

Kids never fail to amaze me

Hi, Jim, An excellent turning by a 13 year old! Pass congrats. on to her. I was nearly 60 before I learned to do that  . Just think what she'll be turning out by the time she has reached your age  . Cheers, Trev.

KeithS Makes the front cover of The Woodworker

Nice comparison, Dewy. I know which one I prefer - and not too impressed with Norm's knowledge of greenhouse gardening from his @Description@ Trev.

    Wot do you do ?

Les, A look at the gallery on this site will show you some examples of what can be achieved (none of mine on there 'cos don't know how to post the pics. yet! ). In fact, if it's round and made of wood, given size limitations, it can be turned, including round tuits  . What...

    tormek

Yep, that's exactly right AP. I had the 2005 - Sod's law, within a couple of weeks the 2006 was on the market! At the same time the new micro-adjuster jig support was available as an accessory - bought that so I now have a 2006! Trev.

KeithS Makes the front cover of The Woodworker

Hi, Keith, Saw the article advertised in last month's mag. and couldn't wait for this month's issue. What a superb greenhouse/cold frame! The article, too, was excellent. I have read it closely and it is certainly one of the best descriptions of a project I have seen - with every 'need...

Hi, Bilzee, The chair looks great 8) You could put your plate on the table and have glasses on both arms! Trev.

Hi Aragorn, Yes - the 1206 is rated for 30 minutes at a time. The 2006 is rated for continuous running. Trev.

Hi, Aidan, Sorry to hear about your fingers. Yep, apple wood can be tough - and unpredictable at times! What machine were you using and have you worked out how it happened yet? All the best for a speedy mend. Trev.

    tormek

Hi, Aragorn, Thanks for your reply. Each to his own, of course, and the T. works for me. Would be interested to hear how you get on trying it, in due course. Cheers, Trev.

    Adirondak Chair

Hi, Bilzee, I am using Sikkens Cetol HLS - a low build, microporous product for exterior wood protection. It resists UV light, surface mould/algae, peeling and cracking. (That's what it says on the tin - as I said, I am fully satisfied with it). I have in the past also used Sikkens...

    tormek

Sorry about my lack of communication skills, Alf  - it was the Tormek that she bought me - what a gal, eh! Chris & Aragorn, @Fraid I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you on this one. I assume by 'crowned' blade you mean a slightly convex shape to the cutting edge of the...

    tormek

I, too, prefer 'crowned' plane irons. Easy to achieve on the Tormek - just a little extra pressure, alternately, on each side of the iron as you grind achieves, and maintains, this. Trev.

    Wax removal

Hi, Jas, Drop of white spirit applied with fine wire wool should do the job. Except, don't use wire wool on oak - it reacts with the tannins in the wood and you will probably end up with black stains. FWIW, although they will look nice varnished, I prefer to leave my tool handles...

    tormek

I complained long enough and loud enough about blunt chisels, etc., and eventually my dear wife bought me one!  Pricey, but an excellent piece of kit. You can guarantee grinding to the exact angle you require and replicate the angles easily. The leather honing wheel, used...

    Adirondak Chair

I found their list of products a bit confusing, too, Bilzee. From memory, they produce various compositions giving varying degrees of filtering of harmful sunlight rays. Again, as far as I recall, the first product to use is the one that gives the protection, the second one puts a gloss on...

    Adirondak Chair

Bilzee, I use Sikkens Cetol, a Scandinavian wood treatment, on garden furniture, summerhouse and garden shed. Two coats to start with then a maintenance coat every 2/3 years - super stuff but a bit pricey. Softwood garden furniture, now about 7 years old, left outside all year and no signs...
