    Wood movement

I made a box as a gift in my unheated workshop, all looked fine and brought it indoors. Couple of days later lid has warped slightly ( enough to brass me off) so that it is no longer flush with base. Obviously the change in humidity , annoying, but it’s wood so live with it. However I also made...

    Wood Identification Please

Came across this when clearing out my Dads garage. It is about 25mm thick 160 wide and was t&g’d. Possibly a floorboard off cut. Going to turn it into a keepsake box , or something, but would like to know what wood it is. Doesn’t feel particularly heavy. Tia.

    Who’s Making Marmalade?

Another for 2:1 sugar. Like others I am trying to reduce my sugar intake but sourdough, butter and homemade marmalade is just not worth giving up🤔. Been making it for 30+ years but I seem to be the only one in my family who likes it. I do force it in my grown up kids at Christmas in the form of...

    Hole behind skirting board

We had a new external door cut into a garage wall and some damp is now evident on the internal skirting board . When I removed the skirting there were holes in the wall and also under the door sill. My question is how to repair it?Should I fill the void behind the skirting with cement, expanding...

    Resawing

Does anyone know where I might get a 50mm piece of maple resawn into 2x 25mm ( ignoring kerf loss) in or around South Bucks? I generally buy from Surrey Timbers but they don’t offer the service . I don’t have a bandsaw but could use my table saw but only after buying a new blade and riving...

    Hinge search

I have been asked to make a foldaway extension , in wood, to fit under the 15cm overhang on a marble topped kitchen island. The extension will be 45cm wide and will fold vertically under the overhang. When horizontal it will extend the worktop by 30cm. I know I can make it such that the...

Bevel angle on double bevel chisel

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post an answer to my question, lots to absorb, some links to follow up, some experimentation to try and lots to practice. I also had an answer from Classic Hand Tools, ( bought from them) and they suggest 15 degrees on each side of the twin bevel # 1...

Bevel angle on double bevel chisel

A recent present was the book Letter Carving in Wood by Chris Pye. As a result I am now also the proud owner of some carving chisels including double bevel straight & fishtail chisels. I am struggling to get these razor sharp and am looking for advice on the best bevel angle to use. I have...
