    American Oak

My pleasure Gidon. I enjoy reading the posts on this site. It does give me a different perspective on WW. I can't answer questions about buying equiptment, or where to purchase stock (timbers are you call it), but if I can help out a little on some general questions, well then I guess I added...

    American Oak

As already pointed out, there are two basic types of Oak found in North America (forget about all the subs for this post). There is Red Oak. It has an open grain with lots of grain patterns. It is the most used wood in the USA at this time. The grain being open does mean that when finishing you...

    Update

 18!!! I can hardly remember being 18! Should have/would have/could have. Many a times I wish I could return to that year. Don't know if things would have turned out any different, but there was a ton of oppertunities that I failed to take. Take the Bull by the horns Charlie, and...

Let's hear some excuses then (the poll on table saw safety)

Do you use the guard and riving knife when using your table saw? Now there is the problem. I do not have a riving knife, and the OEM gaurd was more of a hazard IMO that a help. I do use a spliter and anti kickback device, but since the question did not address that, I had to answer that I don't...

    Dean & Robin

Dean and Robin (as in Hometime?) are not a couple. Robin is the third to appear on the show. The intend to make it appear as if they are a couple, but that is just for the show. :P

What to do with sawdust & chippings

One way is to mix the chips/dust with wax. Just enough wax to hold it together. These make great fore starters. Make them as small/large as you want. If you can figure out a way to press them under pressure, you can make logs!

    Lots of questions.............

    - Are there any special tips for sharpening chisels?, I have an electronic water wheel with a white coloured stone on it and a DMT Diamond stone too but the early attempts havent been anything to write home about. Im particularly struggling with the rounded gouges for the lathe. I would...

    Finishing beech and mahogany ?

Mike Depends on what you plan on using the item for. I almost always suggest a shellac. A Garnet or Amber would really look nice. If you need a harder surface, it can always be top coated with poly.

    Introduction to Shellac

While I am certainly no expert at furniture finishing, I thought I wouldshare with you my favorite method of finishing wood. I find the finishpart of wood working to be the most relaxing and rewarding part of my hobby .I do not like to stain wood if I can help it, nor do I like the look and feel...

    Which Mortiser...?

James Unless you plan on doing a lot of cuts, why not look into an attachment for your DP? I think you are know who "Dano" is. He makes mission style furniture for a living with out a dedicated mortise machine. You'll save money that you can drop into a real good set of chisels.

    What Drill Press...?

James et. al. I find that a bench top Drill press is ideal for someone who is building furniture. I have mine on a shop built mobile base. Why? Two for one idea. My base is a two drawer file cabinet. Since I need the cabinet, and the drill press, I put both of them into the same space. The...

    Stain For Cherry

You are better off using a dye on cherry if you want to add color. I prefer to use shellac with color added. Amber shellac on cherry or garnet gives a wonderful warm color to the wood.

    safety laws

With that said............. I do not use a Dado blade very often at all. I prefer to use a router for rabbit and dado cuts. So you see, the grass is not always greener on the other side of the pond! :D
