    Finishing turned legs

Hi Everyone, I thought I'd post in this forum rather than Finishing as I'm looking for some finishing tips specific to the turned legs I've just completed. Should I be using a friction polish (the sort of thing Mylands do) or should I just finish as I usually do? The wood is European oak and...

Everything seems to be going wrong...

Thanks for the moral support. Have nearly sorted out the problems (and remade the necessary components). Fingers crossed both the table and myself will make it to the end in one piece! :)

Everything seems to be going wrong...

I'm just finished a phase in my latest project (hexagonal Moorish occasional table) where everthing I've done has gone wrong. :x The unusual geometry (for me) has made things much harder, plus this is my first project where I've been doing spindle turning for the legs. I turned all six legs...

    Iron Salts

Matt, you can apply it like any other chemical stain - mix the crystals with water and brush on. Probably worth doing some tests on scraps to get the right colour you want.

advice on woods for chopping boards

Fruit tree woods are good for kitchen cutting boards, e.g. apple, plum, pear, cherry.

    Difficulty with proportions

Andy, I've found a plan for a child's spindle bed in my book of reprints of articles from Gustav Stickleys The Craftsman magazine. The dimensions are as follows: Headboard: 4'4"H, 3'W (2" x 2" posts) Footboard: 3'4"H, 3'W (2" x 2" posts) Distance between Head and Foot: 5'6" Internal width for...

Can someone help me choose a wood type.

Byron, you can have a look at western red cedar. Some info and suppliers in this link http://www.ttf.co.uk/buying/directory/products.asp?productid=85. I've used it when it comes cut for use as garden borders for making brush showjumps (and with an couple of coats of oil based preservatives)...

    Shifting from pine to oak.

Welcome to the forum! On the shrinkage question you could have a look that this calculator http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/shrinkulator.htm, rather nattily called the Shrinkulator (courtesy of our cousins across the Pond). I don't think the available data will cover all woods that we have...

    Spindle turning problems

Thanks for all the tips. I've had a couple more practice runs and finally braved having a go at the legs for the table I'm making as my current project. I'm pleased to say that I've managed to do all six legs and get them right without having to scrap any of them  I had a few close...

    Spindle turning problems

Hello everyone! I am now up and running with my lathe and have been practising and experimenting (including cock ups :D ) with spindle turning. I'm doing a practice run for some legs I'm planning for my next project and have a bit of a problem. The spindle blank is 1 1/4" square and about 26"...

    Denatured Alcohol or Methalated Spirits.

I don't think that using Finishing Spirit would be ideal purely for use as a drying agent because whilst the spirit contains a blend of alcohols it also contains some shellac (or other resin). As I've posted elsewhere (apologies if you've already read them) there were some new regulations that...

Mortices and tenons for hexagonal table

Thanks guys. Still in planning mode for this one... (Like the octagonal table btw).

Mortices and tenons for hexagonal table

Thanks Steve. I think that rhombus or pentagonal shaped legs are a good way to go. I could use dowels or slotted tenons to make it easier to get the faces right (got my angles wrong as well - 120 and 60  only out by a factor of 2!).

Mortices and tenons for hexagonal table

Hi everyone, I'm planning a hexagonal occassional table and am trying to work out the best approach for the tenons for the aprons and the mortices in the top of the legs. As there will be six legs and aprons if I use mortice and tenon joints the angle relative to the top of each leg (which will...

    What wood

The first picture of the end grain looks like Douglas Fir. What does it smell like when you cut it (I always think Douglas Fir smells a bit sweet and buttery)?

    Iron Salts

Jenkins do a good mail order as well. They are also very helpful if you call them and speak to them about what you need. E

    Stolen penguin

I don't know if anyone saw the story on the front page of Wednesday's Telegraph about the baby penguin that was stolen from a zoo in the Isle of Wight. The photograph of its parents was particularly sad as you could clearly tell that the mother was pining for her lost baby. Apparently if the...

    Spindle turning

Thanks very much for all your replies. All the information is very helpful. I always find it a bit nerve wracking when venturing into the unknown so I always like to arm myself with as much information as possible before I take the plunge. On the sharpening side, I'm used to sharpening/honing...

    Spindle turning

Yuletide greetings to everyone! I am bravely venturing into this forum as I'm planning on adding some spindle turning skills to my repertoire (at least I'm going to try :) ). I've plumped for a Record CL1 lathe, which I hope will be adequate for my needs, so I'm now working out what tools I'll...
