    Wireless radiator valves.

We also have a Tado system and are very happy with it. It manages to keep temperature in the rooms very close to the set temperature, also with multiple radiators in a room. It has useful features like 'open window detection', where it doesn't go berserk when there is a sudden temperature drop...

    Veritas Mitre / Miter plane

Not 100% sure what the mitre plane is for, but for the same, or actually a little less, money you can have their shooting plane: https://www.dictum.com/en/tools/woodworking-metalworking/planes/veritas-planes/703831/veritas-shooting-plane-right-handed?ffRefKey=tp-NadGnb which has a skewed PM-V11...

    Cutting Gauge Recommendation

To be fair to Lie-Nielsen, they do market that one for slicing veneer strips for inlay work; not as a generic marking gauge. https://www.lie-nielsen.com/product/tools-for-inlay/tools-for-inlay-latta-slicing-gauge-?node=4180 Frank

Talking of old planes in another thread ..

Thanks Roger, especially that first link is nice as it has pictures which help a lot. If you're not too familiar with old planes then 'less rounded than..' or 'shorter spur' don't mean all that much. Conclusion: some sort of Frankenplane, which is fine by me =) With kind regards, Frank

Talking of old planes in another thread ..

It looks a lot like mine, which reminded me to take another look at it. There is a '3' in the bed under the tote (?). No other markings other than one the blade which is stamped 'STANLEY'. The depth adjuster nut is 1" with left handed threat. I now use it with a Hock blade and...

    Saw id? W&S Heeley sheffield

Thanks Andy, So nothing special then, not withstanding that; It's a great user. I find myself grabbing for this little saw more often than one of my LN saws. That is probably due to slightly more set on the other saws. I seem to remember sharpening this one before I had my saw set. Regards, Frank

    Saw id? W&S Heeley sheffield

Hi, A little while ago I picked up an older back saw at a yard sale; originally to learn saw sharpening. It now performs much better than I was expecting. Comfortable handle (for me) and cuts really well. Any idea who made it or how old it might be? I think it might have been these chaps...

This guy ordered some very cheap planes

s'nice for Karl though; good to see people keeping craftsmen employed! Karl does mention this on his site: To be fair, I think if you add up all his hours and expenses of running a machine shop; prices are probably more or less justified. How long would it take to make one plane? A week...

    Best dovetail saw

The .020" plate on the 'standard' LN dovetail saw is 33% thicker than the .015" one which does make a difference I think. However, I just had a look at the LN website and can't see the thin-plate version anymore. If it has been discontinued then there is little point in recommending it. The...

    Best dovetail saw

I've not seen the Lie-Nielsen thin-plate dovetail saw mentioned yet. Mine seems to work really well and I get quite reasonable result. For me, it is very comfortable to hold and the thin plate and little set make it a joy to use =) See if you can try out some of the different saws somewhere? It...

    Making one-piece wooden plane

Thank you for taking the time to post about these little planes; they look very cute =) When you say 'flat ground stock', does that mean O1 steel? I don't know much about steel but would like to make my own hollows and rounds some day. Regards, Frank

    Japanese smoothing plane (kanna)

Have a look at this guy's youtube videos: http://youtu.be/FeXAzU8XrJA. He has a few videos about choosing the right plane, blades, tuning, sharpening, etc.. and I found them very interesting to watch =)

Dictum - Anyone deal with them

Hi, I know this topic is stale but I just wanted to add my recent experience in case anyone has any reservations ordering from Dictum. Last Tuesday I ordered some straight edges, glue and other bits from Dictum and everything arrived today; just 4 days later and 4 days before Xmas so everyone...

    Japanese tools.

Hi, those are really interesting videos. Of course with youtube, one thing leads to another and I found this guy; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeXAzU8XrJA. He has a series of videos on japanese planes; what to look for, how to tune and sharpen them. I thought it was a really good watch and...

Trying to make a little sense of the LN saw range..

Thanks both, that is really useful information. Those Wenzloff&Sons saws look very nice, I wonder if he ships to the UK.. You are right, it is mostly smaller scale so far, hence my search for a small crosscut saw. There may be a "need" for more saws in the future though. I just build up my...
