What the heck is this doing under my floor boards?!

Yep. I love discovering things like this to be honest! Cheers for comments.

What the heck is this doing under my floor boards?!

Actually sammy, I think you might be on the money with the old fireplace idea. We had a sulphur leach directly above that area due to an old chimney stack that hadn’t been capped off properly. Also, looking at the surrounding timber, it looks to me to be as old as the joists.

What the heck is this doing under my floor boards?!

Well you see, I forgot to mention in my original post but mine isn’t level. It fact, there’s a significant dip in that corner that’s going to need some packing for the new boards. Maybe they had a fireplace there, who knows. I’ve uploaded a picture now. Cheers Edit: I’m also unsure how far...

What the heck is this doing under my floor boards?!

So, I’m fitting some new softwood flooring and found a huge stone slab on a bed of gravle underneath the old boards. Any ideas why? To give some background information; 1930s house, room is a bedroom that previously had a shower in the corner that the stone slab is in. Looks as though...

Question about old DeWalt planer/thicknesser (DW1150)

After a rather enlightening and ongoing discussion regarding Elu's history in a thread I put up yesterday, The reliability and quality of an old DW1150 I've been eying up that is for sale in my area for £150 (also put a thread up about that) has come into question. Upon learning more of the...

    Help required with raised panels.

Awesome write up Custard, thanks so much! That was really helpful. I'm only using pine so hopefully it shouldn't be as demanding on the plane. What size plane do you recommend? I have a Jack and a 4; Paul Sellers was using a 4 but seen as you mentioned the long and constant strokes I'm wondering...

    Help required with raised panels.

I mean there's no harm in trying I guess. I suppose I could just keep practicing until I'm good enough! Still not quite sure what you mean by 'raised and fielded panel' and with the square edge to central. Do you simply mean the edge of the board being square to the panel? Cheers

    What actually happened to Elu?

I see those pop up on eBay a lot. Presumably the batteries are an issue now?

    What actually happened to Elu?

Awesome; looks built like a battle ship. Great write up, too.

Wow, would certainly like to see that!

    What actually happened to Elu?

Thanks for the replies - interesting stuff! My MOF96 has the grey colour you're talking about, but has a black switch and was made in Germany... I'm guessing the Dewalt WD 1150 I've been eyeing up on eBay is to be avoided, then, in account of the fact it has a B&D sticker on it and was made in...

    What actually happened to Elu?

Cheers for the reply. So will the aforementioned cheapening of parts that occured around 1990 with DeWalt be the same for Elu too? MOF97 was a typo, I also have the 96 but not the e. Is there a way to tell how old a tool is?

    What actually happened to Elu?

So if B&D bought the brand in the mid 80s, how much of the gear you see on eBay is lower quality B&D stuff after the acquisition? Does that mean my trusty MOF97 router from Elu is actually B&D?? I've also been eyeing up an old DeWalt planer, and upon closer inspection, this also has the B&D logo.

Interesting, thanks for the write up!

    Help required with raised panels.

I did wonder about MDF but was unsure about how to implement it best - so thanks for the sugestion. As far as the table saw/circular saw suggestion, the circular saw does tilt, which would theoretically allow me to raise a panel. Presumably to make it into a makeshift table saw I'd be building...

    What actually happened to Elu?

I was always under the impression they we bought by black and decker and rebranded under the DeWalt brand. What I don't really understand, though, is that there's a website for 'Elumatec', which Is what Elu was until they changed their name in 1984. They're still going, selling what looks to be...

    Help required with raised panels.

I'm making some raised panel internal doors for the house. I'm far from an experienced woodworker, so with this being a raised panel door I'm in need of a bit of assistance. I've knocked up the frame easy enough - mortice and tenons, the only joint I'm capable of doing well so far! and...
