    Beginner Pine Timber

I would recommend Totton Timber just outside Southampton. Good stocks of unsorted redwood and very impressive stocks of hardwood boards. Also good for plywood and MRMDF.

    Thicknesser

I have the 2012NB. I previously had a Triton thicknesser but the annoying snipe was wasting wood and I couldn't do anything about it. The Makita is beautifully built in comparison, and the very minor snipe, head lock, depth stop and adjustment are great features. The extraction hood has a...

    Light, small, retractable pole.

I had a similar requirement and originally set up a couple of broom handles with clamps that allowed some vertical adjustment for supporting backgrounds and lighting on my "tabletop studio". That worked, but not well enough. I am a keen amateur photographer and had a few lighting stands that I...

Little advice on best course of action for shed base...

I built my wooden 10 x 8 (internal) shed/workshop from scratch some 18 years ago. The slab was sloping slightly for drainage and my built floor also sloped slightly (about 5mm across width). I assembled and braced the sides vertical. My machines and one bench are on casters, get moved...

    Stanley Cap Iron Screw Thread

The effective dia. of 5/16" UNC is 0.2764". Effective dia. of 5/16"W is 0.2769". Half a thou difference. The Whitworth thread angle is 55 deg. and UNC 60 deg., but I never found this to represent a significant difference in practice, nor was the slightly different root and crest form...

    Stanley Cap Iron Screw Thread

If it helps, you'll find that 5/16"-18 Whitworth and 5/16"-18 UNC are interchangeable for all practical purposes.

    Grab Handles in Shower

My wife and I have been using suction grab handles in the shower for a few years now. We are both in our late 70's and use them just to steady ourselves when washing feet etc. They have proved to be extremely useful and reliable on a glazed tile surface which has been scrupulously cleaned...

    torsion boxes, why no triangles?

As an ex-aircraft maintenance engineer (A&C) I reckon you'd be hard pressed to find any modern aircraft without torsion boxes in primary structure including modern composite structures. There are many different implementations of a torsion box, some complex, some not so. I made a "torsion box"...

    Router trouble (DeWalt 625 / Trend T11 / CMT 1850)

I recently fitted a metric Jessum Prestige lift and had an issue with the plate levelling screws. Plate tapped 6mm x 1mm and supplied set screws (grubscrews to us) being 1/4" x 28 UNF. I'd have needed to really butcher the plate to fit them. I simply replaced with 6mm grubscrews and all is...

Replacement Boilers & Building regs….Sneaky NASTY rule change?

Gas savings are not the only issue. If you come to sell your house, a modern boiler and heating system will add more value than its cost. Or look at it from the other way around, if the system is old, then their offer will be reduced by a significant amount, probably greater than the update costs.

    Dowel jig

I lived in Brunei during the 70's and owned one of these "Perahu" boats. I had it made to the standard local design and we used a Yamaha 25 outboard. With two people and two young children on board it planed beautifully and we used it to explore the rivers and access small uninhabited islands...
