What's wrong with my planer/thicknesser?? Blown capacitor?

Thanks for that. On the nut - I did think left hand thread was likely, so tried both, although not with much brute strength.... Definately nothing in the other end that could be a switch, or is accessible. There is a black 'box of tricks' on the motor casing into which all the wiring goes...

What's wrong with my planer/thicknesser?? Blown capacitor?

Well, I finally managed to get another look at the pesky planer. I took the belt off and tried the machine without and exactly the same - span, lights dimmed, plug fuse blew. So, after a lot of hassle, i've taken the motor and NVR switch out of the machine. The two capacitors, on a visual...

What's wrong with my planer/thicknesser?? Blown capacitor?

Ah, right ho... I havent actually removed the belt, but did rotate it all by hand to check that there was no obstruction etc. It turns very easily, with only the weight of the cutter block/feed roller mechanism, so I had assumed that it was providing such a light load it wouldn't be causing...

What's wrong with my planer/thicknesser?? Blown capacitor?

Thanks for the reply - the capacitor was just a guess seeing as it seems to be an issue created by the starting up of the machine. The centrifugal switch? Is this something I am able to look for and mend/replace? Anyone have any other ideas as to what this could be, or who I could contact for...

What's wrong with my planer/thicknesser?? Blown capacitor?

Hello folks, Hopefully this is a simple one... I have an Elektra Beckum HC 260, probably one of the last models made in Germany and coming in the green paint job before Metabo took them over. I've used it a great deal and never had any electrical problems previously, it doesn't trip the fuse...

    rutlands

John - that's because I haven't gotten round to reviewing the speed clamps I bought from them a while ago.... uttter cr*p! However, I have had some good buys from them in the past - like so much nowadays, stuff is made to a price not to a quality so you have to choose wisely, and yes indeed...

Wooden floor paint - any recommendations?

Morning all, I am looking to paint the floor in my narrowboat and need some recommendations on what to use. It is 18mm marine ply which has previously been given a dark stain and possibly a varnish, but there is now a long worn strip down the centre and it all looks a little dark, dismal and...

    A Cherry challenge

Superb.... I wouldn't even know where to start! Are you able to maybe post a picture of the base and explain a little the process - how did you go about chucking the blank? I'd love to have the confidence to be able to try something as impressive, but for now I need to get the basics...

Mortice & tenon glue line thickness

Biscuits work well in my experience, then use a band clamp to apply pressure to the entire circle (and therefore all four of your joints) while the glue dries. Would take no time at all - that is, as long as you have access to a biscuit jointer. Mine was 60 quid online and has been fantastic -...

Supplier of spares for DeWalt DW720 radial arm saw

Here's a quick one - are there any recommendations for suppliers of spare parts for DeWalt? I have a DW720 radial arm saw which I need a new guard return spring and also the plastic knob for the tilting head locking bar. I'm just sprucing her up for sale so if anyone is interested I will put...

    Little Oak Cabinet

Very nice indeed for a "few bits of scabby oak"! For the joints - were these handcut? The hinge fitting - again, by hand or using router then squaring off? I like the 'feel' of knife hinges and don't mind sticky out bit, it's just part of the design. As you open them, is there a little bit...

    Eaves filler for shed roof

We installed the foam plastic eaves filler strips under our corrugated concrete sheeting roof and so far, a year later, theyre all still intact - and unfortunately being surrounded by farmland means its plenty of rodents around. It's working for us.

    Traditional Casement Window

Did you use a dedicated router cutter set for the mouldings - the glazing bars etc - and if so, may I ask the details? Looks to be a top job so I'd be interested in your continuing on - even if you change to the Domino.

    My prized box of timbers

That's a fantastic piece to own. And on the subject of lignum vitae, £427 for a turning blank....! That's some expensive sawdust... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turning-Blank ... 8bb571c59f

    Palm router - any recommendations?

Ah! That is very helpful thanks - I hadnt spotted the T4 - and at 80 quid that is a very good price. Like you Colin, i am dubious I would use it for much other than edge mouldings, light grooving etc so Im thinking of coming down in price and saving that for some more timber..... (or the next...

    Palm router - any recommendations?

I am interested in acquiring a smaller palm router to compliment the large Makita which i have mounted in the router table and another larger Erbauer plunge that I use rarely - I find its too large for the majority of jobs and something smaller and more controllable would do the job better...

Yoo hoo! Lump of Yew - seasoning advice

Options.. options...! I've a Record Power CL4 so quite a large capacity. I had read that Yew can be prone to splitting so wanted to take measures to avoid that. I think for this I shall cut in lenthways then, seal up the ends, and put in storage for a while. I would usually leave the bark on...

Yoo hoo! Lump of Yew - seasoning advice

Hello folks, The wood collection is continuing, with very little actual woodworking ever taking place... where does the time go?? I just acquired this lump of Yew - its around 18inches long and 12inches in diameter. It is still very green as I think it was only cut around a month ago and it...

    Dovetailing MDF?

I recently made kitchen cabinets with 18mm MRMDF for the sides and base. The 'tops' were under the worktop so I just made horizontal rails of around 100mm in width, also from the 18mm MDF. I used three biscuits in each join, just one in the top rails, glued and clamped. If just left without a...
