    Best finish for

Morning all - nearly finished the building of a noticeboard for my allotment committee and would like some advice on a durable finish. It's constructed of some sort of tropical hardwood - I guess Sapelle or some such - hard, very splintery grain. The back is WBP exterior grade ply. I hope to...

HVLP spraying of MDF / Poplar - primer?

Morning all, I recently acquired an Earlex HV5000 model HVLP sprayer as I wanted to see if it was an improvement on brush... mainly in speed, but also comparable if not better results. I have some shelves and cupboards to paint - MDF and Poplar faceframes. Does anyone have any advice on...

Are Festool Router (and tools) really worth the money?

I have another perspective to add - from that of an amateur for whom woodworking is absolutely a hobby. While a lot of people say to me - why do you bother to spend all that money on Festool stuff - and simply enough, it's because I really really enjoy using them as they are great bits of kit...

Best solution for glazed door - glass mounting

Thanks Mike - that's a neat way of doing it, looks good. Sorry not quite sure what you mean re. the rebate being exactly the same depth as the moulding?

Best solution for glazed door - glass mounting

That sounds simple enough. Thanks. I can cut the interior rebate for the glass on the router table on the rails and stiles, prior to assembly. As for the external bead, I think I need to experiment on some scrap as to whether I want an all-round, continuous bead moulding on the external...

Best solution for glazed door - glass mounting

Folks, I'm making a simple noticeboard, with two glazed doors. The doors will be standard mortis and tenons, but I was wondering how best to fit the glass. While i could use the coping and sticking set to create a groove, which normally could take a wooden panel, and then mount the glass in...

    Ideas for timber transport

I have had very good experiences with using www.anyvan.com - for those not familiar this is essentially a web-based system on which you post your delivery job - the item, location for collection and delivery, and you then receive quotes back from private van operators. It has a full...

Router alphabet kits - different fonts?

Well in the end I've purchased the SignPro for £45 plus delivery from Rutland as it was in their sale. Not sure what the difference is with the slightly cheaper sign crafter model which looks identical, I think it's just extra letter templates. So of anyone would like a sign do let me know...

Router alphabet kits - different fonts?

I'm looking at making a new noticeboard for the allotment society and want to make a sign for the top of it. Looking on the tinterweb there doesnt seem to be any options for decent fonts - just the rather simple-looking one done by trend. If I wanted something a bit more classy, is this a...

Hardware for simple overlapping sliding door cabinet

Thanks for this - my experience of simple routed grooves is that the doors tend to stick and I was hoping for a more professional-looking solution, but I've not ruled it out. I may just take a £25 punt and see how they work - annoying that the full dimensions are not included in the product...

Hardware for simple overlapping sliding door cabinet

Mornin all, Anyone got any good suggestions for hardware for overlapping sliding door cabinets - the rail/hangers etc? It's a simple floor-level cupboard on the wall at right angles to the WC, making use of that space for storage of loo rolls, cleaning stuff and less frequently used stuff. As...

We all like a nice rack. ... Tool shelf ideas please.

Thanks again - some more great ideas. I did have to think carefully about the rack behind the lathe, but unfortunately it really is the only place for it to go, I just don't have space for anything else floor standing. Its a long bed CL4 so the rack would be orientated to the right, so not...

We all like a nice rack. ... Tool shelf ideas please.

Ahh... these are good.... Dalboy and Harlequins are both nice and simple. Dalboy's probably wins on cost as it doesnt require the tubes, just relies upon them 'leaning' backwards in the rack. Next up - got to sort out some decent lighting and dust extraction...

Les Thorne demo at Didcot & District Woodturners

Thanks Dave - If I can I may try and pop along, although start a new job that week so will have to see. Are you involved in the Didcot and District Woodturners club? I'll give it a Google, but am hoping to get turning this winter so will be keen to learn from others if I can.

We all like a nice rack. ... Tool shelf ideas please.

Here's an easy one - what homemade shelf system are you using to store you turning tools? I want a tool rack for around 20 chisels (seeing as that's what I inherited, give or take) to mount directly above the lathe. I was thinking about a simple shelf, with two rows of 50mm holes cut with a...

Shutting the door once the horse has bolted... security tips

Well this post has taken a rather bizarre turn! I was only after some practical tips – thanks to those for their advice in this regard. it's now resurfaced with some unexpected comments which I hope I've not caused. To be quite honest, yes it’s a bit of a blow to see thousands of pounds of...
