    Britain's Best Woodworker

For all those in this thread who think the title of the programme is wrong, spend 3 minutes watching this video …Mission statement or even if you’re ok with the title, if you’ve ever had a corporate job.

    Camera buying advice please

My only advice would be to find your local camera shop and walk in there. You may come out enlightened. It’s likely that there is a small “family owned “ shop in your locality. Don’t buy from Amazon.

    Whats your favourite...

I’d second that and add that it finishes beautifully too.

How to cut brass discs with woodworking tools

Try looking at this and the two or three other related posts. James makes a mallet with a transition piece and cuts it and shapes in on a "wood" lathe. It may give some food for thought Hashtagwoodworking

    Joining water butts in series

I have 4 water butts connected like this drawing The last one only fills as an overflow and when this is full it returns to the drain. Hose kits were from B&Q from memory. They don’t leak after a few years. I guess they will when the rubber washer perishes eventually. PS turn the diagram...

    Hi Everyone

It does look like Chris's old lace. I did a course with him, but he's retired now. I met the guy who took over (can't remember his name) and he seemed a good teacher.

Jointing reclaimed timber boards - best method?

I use ply to aid alignment when making solid (olive) wood worktops and bar tops. A 6mm strip of marine ply fits perfectly in a 6mm routed groove (on 25mm thick boards in my case). If you're gluing up over a long length they make things easier. I use marine ply because "normal" play is about...

    Timber for roof finial

I've never used Accoya. Does it turn OK (for the ball at the end)? Also, is it widely available - I'm in NW England and not seen it in any local merchants (but maybe not looked hard enough either).

    Timber for roof finial

I doubt anyone would notice. My lathe also has an indexer, but I did think I may be better making it out of six staves using a jig on the thicknesser. Not sure which would be easier / better. Depends if I can get suitable timber in the right cross-section.

    Timber for roof finial

Thanks @johnnyb. Any idea on the expected lifespan of the redwood? The current one has been on the roof for tens of years, may 100, so I need something that will last a minimum of 10 years ... That finial looks similar to the one I've got to copy, although the "spike" is faceted rather than...

    Timber for roof finial

I've been asked to make a roof finial. Dimensions overall are 1500mm long, 120mm square. It consists of a spike of 600mm and a 900 square section with turned ball. The construction should be straightforward, but Im not sure what the "best" timber for this would be. Clearly it's the sort of thing...

    Shaper Origin.. again.

I spoke to a Festool dealer a short while ago who’d bought his own Shaper and wanted to become a dealer/agent. The company didn’t want to go down that route though.

    Britain's Best Woodworker

As others have said - it’s not strong enough. The roughing gouge is made from a folded bit of steel, with a tang. A bowl gouge should be used on the edge of a face grain/bowl blank because the roughing gouge can dig in to the end grain and snap the tool (in extremis). The roughing gouge looks a...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

One of the things I wasn’t happy about was the guy making the Indian themed house was using a roughing gouge on a bowl blank. Not the right tool and dangerous. I would have thought someone would have screened the final edit for stuff like this.

    Shaper Origin.. again.

One of my customers has a Shaper Origin and he demo’d it to me in my unit. Very easy to use. Easy system to register the edge of a board, then start a design at a defined point from the edge. Easy to produce good SVG files from Fusion (free plugin). Great for inlays and lettering straight out of...

Mt2 revolving centre, but with M33 X 3.5MM thread for scroll chuck (SC4) any ideas.

The SC4 has to be bought with an insert for it and there are plenty, so choose a centre with any thread you like and buy the right insert from Record Power?
