    cold hide glue

Although you don't say, mmm, I would guess you are in the USA where you can buy anything you want. The European parliament don't like us to buy anything in the high street that may hurt us (apart from tobacco and booze which raise taxes). If we get a cold we are limited to one small bottle of...

How do you store your rasps and files?

The most common place for a file tang to go in is on the underside of the wrist. It happened to me, the file unexpectedly hit the vice, but I only took off a piece of skin . You can lose a tendon, or tear the artery that you use to take your pulse. If you like to use a file in the hand for...

    cold hide glue

According to the web, Sodium Benzoate seems to be a "poisonous food preservative" :? . Is it available over the counter anywhere? How much do you need? And by the way does anyone have a UK mail order source for small quantities of other old fashioned chemicals like Sodium Bichromate, Oxalic...

    Saw Till Design

I agree, but its even harder if you can't remember which one it was! In any case if its a quick sharpen, rather than a recut, it's nice to be able to give each tooth two light file cuts, and rest every couple of inches, knowing you can start where you left off. I can't see the shape of a...

    Saw Till Design

I know its probably sucking eggs and grannies time, but with my eyesight I always daub permanent black felt tip all along the teeth gullies so I can see which one I filed last, especially if I need to stop and scratch something. When I do the other side I repeat the daubing. I haven't seen that...

    Is this a daft idea?

You could fit a new blade, then find a nice handle for it....

    Is this a daft idea?

I don't think letting down the steel and sharpening what you have got is the answer. Hardpoint saws usually have a completely different profile, and as you have lost some teeth then you would need to cut a new set of teeth as you suggest - IF the steel were OK. However saw blades must be fairly...

    Saw Till Design

I would like to have the space to have things like saw tills and wall mounted tool cupboards, and of course there is nowhere for a table saw. But then I have never had anything larger so I don't miss it. On the good side I can heat it with 0.5KW, and for making small boxes etc it's all I need.

    Saw Till Design

I keep mine in racks in a heated tool cupboard under the bench. The L-Ns have their leather cases and the Dorchester has a plastic tooth guard on. I have to take care to put them in the rack carefully since I chipped a corner off the handle of a L-N  All my toys have to be put away after...

    thought for rob lee

Sorry Paul I also mis-read. As has been said, I wouldn't worry about bench plane blades too much because of the lateral adjustment. However some shoulder planes like a Record 042 can give very little lateral adjustment. As part of refurbishment I spent some time getting the blade in my old 042...

    thought for rob lee

Having started with metal myself (also at Vauxhall for a while) then moved to wood I find myself worrying too much about the odd thou error on a tool, but I suppose it's a silly question to ask if the square is not at fault? I must confess I often use my planes to check my try squares! Do you...

    Axminster Again!!!

I have always had superb service from Axminster, even when I bought a leather case for my L-N carcass saw that had "Axminster" embossed on it instead of "Lie Nilesen". They sent out a replacement immediately, with a returns label to send the other one back freepost. Maybe its because I have...

    Disappointed with a Clifton 420

No sooner said than tried - look at my brand new L-N 073 with 2 rubs on 600 grit - and I thought it was flat! Thanks David, I will finish the job later.

    Past Mistake - witha battery!

I nearly lost my workshop last year by a mistake that never crossed my mind before. I always keep flammables - meths, polishes, oils etc - in a closed cupboard, so that on the odd occasion I may have a blowlamp going there is no danger of a fire. Naturally I keep my wire wool in there with the...

    Of Handsaws

I used that Bob Wearing gadget to great effect on my first attempt to sharpen my tenon saw, BUT you MUST remember to readjust the angle to do the other side! My saw got 4 or 5 very strange teeth at one end before I noticed! Then I used it on a R&L Dorchester dovetail saw where I could hardly...

    Disappointed with a Clifton 420

Tony, I am with Ulrich here. (sorry, can't do the "quote" thing). The Axminster prices are £137 for the Clifton against £169 for the larger LN 073 which is superbly finish ground, and then shipped here. I have only seen pictures of the Cliftons, but I was concerned about the rounded corners to...

    Indian hand tools

My father had a cheap block plane from a £1 shop. I sharpened the blade properly and checked that the sole of the plane was flat by rubbing it on a sheet of glass with medium wet and dry, and it cut really quite nicely. It needed sharpening again quite quickly, but it did lasted out the job...

    Indian hand tools

"India" stones are made from a particular type of Aluminium Oxide and usually are made in USA. They are used with a light oil. Anything coming out of India will be a waste of luggage space, usually being crumbly. You can get them on any UK market stall but you may as well use a paving slab...
