    First ever turning!

Sharpening on a grindstone and dipping into water frequently to cooling, is a falacy. If your chisel discolours whilst grinding - too late, you've overheated it and destroyed the temper. What you're sharpening should stay as cool as possible, thus a slower grinder or a softer stone.

A very slow Fobco Star refurbishment

Forgive if this is obvious. Careful of overheating, or protracted heating as the heat may migrate to the shaft and expand it as well.

    Nice skip find

Some common sense mixed with a basic legal angle might assist to uncomplicate this topic. The 'reasonable man's interpretation' is the core of relevance here. It is reasonable to assume that goods in a 'rubbish skip' on 'public property' has been discarded by the previous owner (who has no...

    A little safety warning

Our safety catch phrase on construction sites is Stop-Think-Go. The 'think' part is a mini risk assesment.

Any tips for getting a good jointed edge on a router table? I'm struggling.

Maybe I don't see the wood for the trees. Why use a fence with a cutter fitted with a top bearing?

    You guys

Growing old is compulsory. Growing up is optional.

Can anyone confirm what these are called?

Balls from an old bearing? Wouldn't be able to drill them, but do you need to.

Optical illusion or just plane butchery?

Always believe the rule and square before you believe the eye. Measuring tools are not influence by light, mood, perception and make believe.

Personalised markings for items you have made

My symbol is a squirrel. I had a rubber stamp made and mark all my 'creations' with the squirrel, done with normal inking pad ink. The marking on some work I've come accross again, is still visible 10 years on.

    Have you noticed....

On a trip to Zimbabwe a couple of year back, saw a truck with no rear lights, but painted on the tailgate was "no lights - no spares".

    Is this a quality brick?

Exactly. Remember the brick is there only to keep the mortar apart😉

    How to achieve this colour?

Most newly worked and coated timber will darken (mature) with time. Some relatively quickly, others over some years.Darken it now, it will darken further with time. Clear coating now, on the floor in the photo's will give you a slightly-darker-than-straw hue when matured in a year or so.

No reason at all, go for it.

Misconceptions about RPE (Respiratory Protective Equipment)

I think there might be some confusion playing here. A partical filter will clog. A vapour filter will allow badies through when it reaches saturation.

Spray kit recommendations ( walls and cabinets )

OK. There must be some method on the gun to regulate the volume out of the nozzle. If not, experiment with the thickness of the paint

Spray kit recommendations ( walls and cabinets )

I prefer water based primer, it clings better. Thin only sufficiently for the spray gun to dispense it, if too orange peel effect, thin slightly more. Throttle back on paint delivery to the nozzle (turn the screw behind the trigger until the trigger pull is sufficient to allow a finer mist)...
