    VFD 3 phase Motor settings

I did some investigation, and was wondering how to know what amount of load the (potentially) restrictive bearings were putting on the motor. I realized the VFD has a setting to display the current being used by the motor, and sure enough as it reached the peak rpm, the current was 2.5 amps, the...

    VFD 3 phase Motor settings

The VFD is a Yaskawa J1000 rated at 1.1kW. It has a heatsink but no fan, I have bolted it to the base of the casting inside the leg, so hopefully it will not get too hot. Until I have sorted the bearings, I think I will leave the settings as they are.

    VFD 3 phase Motor settings

I have a 6" dia loose leafed mop that I have previously used with success on a bench grinder which I believe was a 2 pole motor, so 3000RPM approx. I assume you meant 1,500 RPM not 15,000

    VFD 3 phase Motor settings

I do get a bit of a grumbling noise now and again - further evidence that my bearings are the issue here!

    VFD 3 phase Motor settings

I would like to go a little higher for attaching a buffing wheel. Ideally 3000RPM or so. I cannot even reach 2250RPM which as you say with the standard motor and pulley arrangement I should be able to. I had not considered the bearings restricting it. Feels easy to turn by hand but at higher...

    VFD 3 phase Motor settings

I have my wood lathe setup with a VFD. With the default settings, I found I could vary the speed smoothly, but it had very little power, and I could stop the chuck easily with my hand unless it was running at 40Hz or above. I have improved this now but mostly through guesswork of the many...

    No Load Switch

Are you sure there is no way of activating it without a device attached? I previously had a vacuum cleaner that worked this way, it had an on/off switch, and a detecting/not detecting switch. if the detecting switch was off then the standard on/off switch would operate the vacuum as normal.

chuck sticking on headstock spindle face

I use a piece of gasket paper, maybe started off 2mm or so thick but has now squashed down very thin. I had not considered that it might absorb water, I may put a little oil on it to prevent this.

2 speed 3 phase motors question

looks like me vfd settings for higher frequencies need adjusting then. Thanks.

2 speed 3 phase motors question

I currently have a 4 pole motor on a VFD, although it is an older motor so will not have been designed with VFD in mind. I would like more torque at low speeds for large bowls, and some higher speeds for final sanding. I think I will do more research on adjusting my VFD settings, currently with...

2 speed 3 phase motors question

If I have say a 4 pole induction motor (3 phase) is it possible to rewire it into a 2 speed motor, by joining up the coils inside such that they pair up and the motor becomes a 2 pole or 4 pole motor, depending on a switch. This would be very handy for my wood lathe, I am just curious whether...

    Looking for a new lathe

I am very happy with my Union Graduate lathe, I retrofitted a variable speed drive to it. They are very heavy, and the main casting is one piece so be prepared for a bit more effort getting it home compared to a modern lathe design. The weight adds to making it a good machine though, once setup!

    Rewiring advice requested

I think without knowing the exact circuit diagram of the contactor, we cannot be confident over a forum that we are giving solid and safe advice to wire this up properly. You should be able to find a circuit diagram online if there is a part number on the contactor device itself?

Remote stop/start and speed control for Jet 1642 lathe

You could buy a small plastic electrical box, and remove the existing start/stop buttons and install in the box. Then a cable from the box back to the head unit, you would not need to know much about the electrics just to lengthen the cables already in place. magnets on the back of the box and...

    Rewiring advice requested

I believe having the contactor between motor, power and on off switches is a fairly standard setup for many machine tools, I dont think it will be specific to the union graduate. Can you maybe find the spec sheet for the contactor you have online?

    union jubilee modification

Yes its a popular modification to wood lathes as well as many other machine tools as John has said. Make sure if you are using reverse, that your faceplates/chucks can unwind unless you setup some way of locking them from rotation when in use (eg. grub screw). I have a Union graduate with...

    Rewiring advice requested

Might be a bit tricky with your "custom" double foot switch... are you saying both switches need to be held down for the motor to start?

    Viceroy lathe...

I picked up my union graduate (similar size and weight to the viceroy) in a hatchback, loading it was easy as the seller had a forklift. I would recommend a larger vehicle or van if available, as the suspension was resting on the bump stops all the way home, and it was very difficult to remove...

    New lathe

I think that Axminster model uses an expanding cone variable speed, which appear to be prone to problems, and are less reliable than the electronic variable speed of the record power. Have you considered bringing your existing record power back to life, maybe just by upgrading it to variable speed?
