    Stain for oak bannister rail

I’ve just used osmo hard wax oil on the bannister id stripped and it gave great results. It’s quite pricey but you only need a small tin for a banister. I used the natural finish which leaves a light sheen but still keeps the wood looking natural. Really easy to apply, plenty of videos on...

    Raised bed for chiminea

That’s probably sound advice. I am slightly worried about the smoke drifting through open windows - neighbours might not love me! Guess it’s not very different to have a BBQ though

    Raised bed for chiminea

Thanks for the heads up! Yeah, I am a bit worried about it breaking. My uncle has had one for years and it did crack a bit at one point, still usable, but he just left his out all the time. Think I’ll keep it in the garage over the winter. Not that it’s much warmer in there mind! I’ve heard you...

    Raised bed for chiminea

Ha, not a bad idea. Need to save money on it where i can. Probably end up spending more on this base than the chiminea cost in the first place. Fence posts cheaper than sleepers, but not much!

    Raised bed for chiminea

    That’s a good idea!

    Raised bed for chiminea

This is one concern I had - but then I’d have to allow for drainage? that’s pretty much what I’m thinking of but on a smaller scale.

    Raised bed for chiminea

Yeah I considered that - like building a level base ...but then I was quite drawn to idea of being able to bury the legs a bit. Think I am leaning towards fence posts whichever method I go with, sleepers are more expensive than I realised! Possible overkill too and it’s not a huge yard. Just...

    Raised bed for chiminea

See what you mean, although I like the idea of it being a bit more sturdy and was thinking I could embed the legs in the sand a little. Main concern was whether I can just throw sand and gravel directly on to the brick...can’t see why not really. Just one of those things I end up thinking too...

    Raised bed for chiminea

Hi all, Looking for some ideas and advice on building a raised bed which I can stand a clay chiminea in. The chiminea is quite large (125cm x 50cm) and comes with a metal tripod style stand. the problem I’ve got is that the back yard is just brick and also on a slight slope, so I’m wanting to...

    How To Buy Hardwoods

Does anyone know of any good wood yards that would sell hardwoods in Tyne and Wear or near? There are a few I know of but their websites only show white oak under the hardwood section and ‘Siberian larch’, which I don’t know much about. Just wondering if there’s anywhere within spitting distance...

    Wood filler with osmo oil?

Thanks for the heads up on the vinegar - think I might try some light oak wood dye in that case, seen some liberon stuff at screwfix I’ll try. Hard to test it out somewhere as there’s no exposed veneer elsewhere on the desk.

    Wood filler with osmo oil?

Thanks - it’s not actually a hollow - it’s flush with the rest of the wood, I guess it must have swollen a bit at that point which is why I ended up going through to it, so I can’t fill it (don’t need to). Just need to see if I can stain that specific spot. Didn’t want to use any stain as a...

    Wood filler with osmo oil?

Thanks all. I decided to leave it but am now furious with myself as I went a bit overzealous with the sanding and have worn the veneer away. Kicking myself because I knew it was a risk and kept telling myself to be careful. probably not much I can do about it now - guess I could try to stain...

    Wood filler with osmo oil?

Thanks all - I might just see how it looks after I finish sanding and finish with the oil. I think it looks okay, and maybe my girlfriend will be less bothered once it’s finished nicely! Good advice on the wax sticks though if I do decide to try and fill it - not used them before but they look good

    Wood filler with osmo oil?

I’ve not seen this wax sticks before - thanks, that looks like it could be a good solution

    Wood filler with osmo oil?

Thanks, to be honest there’s nothing really that awful - I’d be tempted to just leave them as I think they give it more character, but my girlfriend is less a fan of the ‘rustic’ look :) it’s mostly this split at the side I’d like to fill. Tried to photograph it and attached

    Wood filler with osmo oil?

Hi all, I’m restoring an old oak desk and would like to fill a couple of the gaps that have appeared in some of the joints. I’d like to use some of the sawdust from sanding for this to get as good a match as possible, but I know mixing sawdust and glue can mean the finish won’t penetrate. I’ve...

Metal roof insulation to fix condensation

Thanks very much for the detailed help. I think I have an idea of what I want to do now but may post you a message explaining a bit more to see if I’m understanding you correctly.

Metal roof insulation to fix condensation

I’m leaning more towards this idea of going in from the top and putting insulation in from above and replacing the existing corrugated roof. It’s in pretty good condition. What’s the benefit of the spacer bars and brackets? The sheets already rest on the beams in place so presumably I could just...

Metal roof insulation to fix condensation

I’m certainly able to do that. Which was more or less what I was thinking but maybe putting some insulation in too just on the off chance it made it slightly warmer. it really needs a new door putting on too as the old wooden ones are starting to rot a bit. Whole thing sounds like it’s becoming...
