    Staircase treads...

I’ve ordered some oxalic acid and going to try a test step this weekend, will let you know how it goes. Pretty much my last resort, after that I’m just going to finish it with one or two coats of the osmo tint did you use any epoxy resin for cracks? I’m not sure whether to repair a couple of...

    Staircase treads...

Hi, I was wondering how you got on with this? I’m going through a very similar process at the moment and my girlfriend also isn’t too keen on the ‘rustic’ look of some of the darker scuffs. It’s not so much the different colour in the middle but there are a lot of small dents that have gathered...

Sanding discs - Bosch hook and loop

Thanks - can’t find anywhere on the page that specifies it’s for that model. Tricky because they are very similar to the Bosch green ones I think...superglue worked anyway so got the job finished at least!

Sanding discs - Bosch hook and loop

yeah - bit of a daft question really! 😀Makes sense.

Sanding discs - Bosch hook and loop

I think that’s the problem I’ve got - it looks fine but I’ve maybe melted the hooks. I was sanding stairs and was using the edge of the sander on some parts to get into deep gouges - since been reading and that’s one of the things that kills them apparently, because the heat then builds up...

Sanding discs - Bosch hook and loop

Hi all, recently bought a Bosch pro gex-125 orbital sander and it’s been working great but the hook and loop seems to have stopped gripping discs or the backing pads that came with some mesh carbide discs I bought. I know there’s a life span to hook and loop but I’ve only used it to sand down...

    Mid range/budget chisels

That looks like a good deal actually. Not heard much about bahco chisels but know they’re a reputable brand generally. Good that the set comes with a stone too (although I have a diamond stone now so not essential).

    Mid range/budget chisels

Thanks - not heard of those before but they do look nice and pretty reasonable on here: https://www.fine-tools.com/stemmeisen.html

    Mid range/budget chisels

Thanks for the detailed response. Shame I don’t live in the US! 🙂 I might buy one or two mid range from different makers (maybe one kirchen, one Ashley iles etc) and see how I feel with them. I don’t mind spending a bit more on tools that I think I’ll be using a lot. Although I’m just getting...

    Mid range/budget chisels

Loads of great advice here. I think I’m going to head to a local boot sale on 18th so may hold off any purchases until then and keep an eye on eBay. I am tempted by the kirchen from Axminster if nothing shows up second hand. Maybe just buy one to start. I’m hardly going to be building furniture...

    Mid range/budget chisels

The Japanese chisels look really nice and are interesting, but I’m thinking as a beginner maybe best to start with traditional...they do look nice though. Aren’t they harder to sharpen though as steel is harder?

    Mid range/budget chisels

Thanks everyone for the good advice. Think the main issue I have right now is not being able to go anywhere and actually see them before I buy (plus loads online are sold out).

    Mid range/budget chisels

That is the shame at the moment. It’s why I’m curious about the Axminster ones as I think if I go down they’ll probably let me have a look at a couple before I buy, but they don’t do marples or narex, just the rider ones and kirchen.

    Mid range/budget chisels

I’d like to get to a car boot sale or flea market but they’ve all been off for lockdown. Guess the car boot sales might be back on after next week though?

    Mid range/budget chisels

No that’s okay - I know what you mean. I guess what I’m wondering though is how much my max bid should be. For example, a new set of the marples is £50 for 4, so I assume I shouldn’t pay much more than that for these ones...unless the steel quality is just far superior in these used Stanley’s...

    Mid range/budget chisels

Thanks. Think I’m leaning towards the marples ones. Like the fact that they look a bit more durable too. I’ve actually already got sharpening stone as I bought an old Stanley no4 and restored it, so I’ve got an Axminster double sided diamond stone and have a scrap of leather im planning on...

    Mid range/budget chisels

Thanks for the heads up. Wondering what the max bid should be for these. Are they better than the marples would you say?
  18. P

    Mid range/budget chisels

Thanks - the marples do look good and are temptingly low priced. I assume these are good/precise enough to get started on dovetails etc? I’d like to ‘future proof’ a bit if I can even though I’m just starting out, guess with them being that reasonably priced I can always upgrade later on...need...

    Mid range/budget chisels

Cheers. They do look good but the set (and lots of the singles even) seem sold out. So much is sold out right now, think it must be covid supply issues. Might actually buy a couple of singles of different brands and see how they feel

    Mid range/budget chisels

Hi all, Looking for some advice on some chisels to get started with as beginner. Not wanting to spend crazy money but don’t mind up to £100 for a set or maybe £50 or so for a couple of good ones separate (seen some advise just buying a couple to begin rather than a whole set) anyone used the...
