Wadkin BGS 12" saw motor conversion

Roughly. A 2 HP one is currently £460. It will add something to the value of your saw, though. It also gives you the benefit of software control, e.g. soft start, controlled stop within 10 seconds. You have such a good saw there that it is worth keeping it running, one way or another.

Building a desk - seeking advice

I think many of us would recommend building a bench as your first project. It will be enormously useful for building a desk, and will give you practice in much of the same kind of construction. Besides, mistakes on a bench can be considered as battle scars, but a desk you use every day is a...

Wadkin BGS 12" saw motor conversion

No, you can get 415V 3 phase investors that run off 220V single phase. I use Drives Direct, have three which have run very satisfactorily for several years of hobby use. The 415V ones are dearer, but in my view well worth it.

Benefits of using a smaller saw blade on a table saw?

Thanks Custard, that is very helpful. Keith

Benefits of using a smaller saw blade on a table saw?

I manage very well with three blades: a Freud thin cut ripping; a combo general use; and an 80 tooth for fine cross-cutting and laminate work. I have heard two schools of thought on the height/angle of the blade. At school, we were taught that the blade should only just protrude over the work...

    Wood reamer materials advice needed

I would use tool steel (silver steel) rather than stainless as it will take a better edge, especially if you heat treat it a bit. The chair maker's trick is how woodwinds were traditionally made. Mild steel is actually adequate for the edge, but I share your doubts about brass. But note that the...

    Drill press?

Yes you can get single phase to three phase converters/inverters. I have three machines running off units from Drives Direct. They have a very good chap who will tell you what you need, given a picture of your motor plate. There are other options too but i know less about them.

    Workbenches and wood expansion/shrinking

Wend, the force exerted by the screw is much less than the force exerted by wood swelling on absorbing moisture. Soyou can do the screw up pretty tight and it will still slide.

    Workbenches and wood expansion/shrinking

+1 for using an enlarged hole. I screwed from underneath with enlarged holes, coach bolts with washers. No cracking in 20+ years. After being abroad for 7+ years, indeed it had moved a bit; I loosened the screws, realigned the top, then tightened up again. The shed is unheated (except when I...

Wadkin AGS 10 Affairs and Spares

When you unwrap it, post a pic of the motor plate on here (as well as other pics, of course, that is obligatory!). There are people here who know much more about it than I, who will be able to tell you your options.

Wadkin AGS 10 Affairs and Spares

I run my three phase machines off invertors from Direct Drives. This includes a Wadkin AGS10 (also a lathe and miller), which needs the more expensive 415V supply. They have worked flawlessly for several years. Not often mentioned is the software facility, to program in a soft start and a <10s...

The (almost) no plans bench build

After using a flush vice for 40 odd years, I changed to offset fitting, trying it out with a temporary spacer first then making it permanent. I now much prefer it. Easier to introduce work for clamping, and possible to clamp a component with sticky-out bits near the end. As always, depends on...

Dewalt DW745 [OR induction motor in unheated workshop?]

My Wadkin AGS lives happily in an unheated shed. I check it for rust from time to time n the winter, but it's not a big problem - I do keep it well waxed. If you do see rust just clean it off with wire wool and WD40 then wax. Keith

    wooden vice screw

I may be able to help but not till mid-July, when I shall have the time. I do now have the Beall kit for making screws and nuts in 3/4" and 1 1/2" sizes, and a supply of dowels but have not become familiar with them yet. Keith

    becoming a sole trader

Exceptions to the point that customers can reclaim VAT is that (a) private customers and (b) educational institutions cannot reclaim VAT, so your products will simply cost 20% more for them. If you sell mainly to VAT registered businesses then indeed they can reclaim. So analyse your likely...

    Tool porn

I bought some Bridge City tools fifteen years ago when I worked the States, and visited Portland from time to time. And I find that I do use them regularly and enjoy doing so. The set of three adjustable squares I use almost every time I'm in the workshop, and set them before any critical...

    Bench Vice

I agree, extra stress would be caused only if the base heated up faster than the rods. That's unlikely, and so is the idea of a explosion. Bending and cracking is more likely. I don't think the OP need worry in the least, at tightnesses comparable to usual clamping pressure.

    Wadkin AGS10 restoration

You must have exactly the same module and worm diameter (or the equivalent in Imperial) as the one you are replacing; close will not do, it will just jam. You can, however, do stuff with the bore and length or end fittings if these re not an exact match. Keith
