    Best jack plane

If I've read your post correctly then the 5 1/2 will be your only bench plane? Are you starting with rough sawn or par timber? If prepping rough sawn you are going to get very fed up very quickly, as others have said a 5 1/2 is (and in my opinion) far too heavy for dressing rough timber. I have...

    electrical testing

Being a high voltage vehicle technician in my day job, when working inside the battery we have to 'gear up', insulated boots, 2 layers of gloves (one cotton, one insulated), overalls with a fine mesh inside to act as a faraday cage in the event of contact and a face shield. Of course these...

Designing some side tables, out of comfort zone, input need please!

That's looking good now! Mortices can be cut with a router but I find it quite a tedious job, for me its quicker to use a chisel and mallet. I have a spare 1/4 mortice chisel kicking about if you PM me your address I will pop it in the post. Just for inspiration here are a couple of smaller...

    Gorilla glue

I tend to only use pu for exterior joinery or things I need to glue fast, I've been using this pu which is in a cartridge that fits in a caulking gun. Any squeeze out I wait until its cured then use a filling knife to remove. https://www.toolstation.com/5-minute-polyurethane-wood-glue-gel/p78519

Post a photo of the last thing you made

One of a pair of bedside tables in oak, finished in hard wax oil and wax. I'm still waiting on the drawer pulls which are a leather loop with brass stud. Appologies for the cluttered workshop in the background.

Recommend me a random orbit sander

I've got this one https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-erb723sdr-125mm-random-orbit-sander-230-240v/5952r to be honest its great, I've sanded both wood and plaster with it and its performed very well indeed. I did get a pad saver for it as spares for erbauer are difficut to source, but you should...

Bench vices for Hand Tool Woodworking

I use a record style QR vice but mine is not flush with the face of my bench, this means I can get my fingers between the work piece and the bench (really helpful when putting things in and out of the vice), I have found a downside and that is when I have been dovetailing wide boards say 24"...

    Sash making video.

I have done something similar but with a squareish peg, i.e a square peg in a round hole, its never coming out, the knack is to make iit square enough to grab but round enough so it doesn't split the work. Matt

    Mounting an irrgular hone

Bill Carter has a video on just this subject, in fact he did a series on making an oil stone box. This is the video where he sets it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UAdQ03seSE he refers to putty which I presume to be linseed putty. Matt

how square is square on a worktop

If its a square edge then the ones I have seen are dead square, they're that square that normally there is no need for a worktop jig you just butt joint them. I don't see a problem with using a worktop jig mind but if its true square edge then there is not much need really. Matt

    Top uses for combination plane?

Up until I got a wooden plough plane my combination planes were primarily used for cutting grooves, I've never had much luck with the beading cutters though.

Regular Mortice Chisel or Bevel Edged for your Mortices

In short I use both, it all depends on what chisel I have available to me at the time. I did all the mortices on my bench with a bevel edged chisel (no drilling) because I didn't have an appropriate sized mortice chisel at the time. I do prefer using mortice chisels though as I don't need to...
