How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

He's also shown his ignorance about Brexit this week....not doing too well on the PR front recently :ROFLMAO:

    Invasion of US Capitol building

I spent 2 months in Philadelphia whilst on a artist's residency. I vividly recall hearing what I thought was a car back firing only to be told by a fellow resident that it was in fact a 38 gun shot; he was Canadian and had a gun for hunting...best venison I ever had at his home grilled on a bbq...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

I use to describe Wales as that bit stuck on the west side of England in an attempt to explain where it was. :D

    Invasion of US Capitol building

Sorry but I couldn't help laughing at this sentence. It brought back memories of continually having to explain where in the UK I came from; at that time it was Wales and few Americans had heard of it. :) By the way I'd rather a cow to a bull :D

    Persuading a non payer

Not sure if it is still an option but having successfully used the county court court a few time on gaining judgement the "oral examination" is more powerful than sending the bailiffs in. It required the defendant attending before a judge to answer questions about their finances, Failure to...

Won't somebody think of "young people"? (Edit: and No, older people aren't "to blame")

It was interesting hear Mark Carney's take on this subject recently in the Reith Lectures.

    Serious skills

Bear in mind that if you want the grain lines to continue/flow from the base to the lid this method won't help achieve that.

    Bringing goods from the EU

I’ve refrained from getting involved in this thread although I have been following it with first amusement and then despair. Despair at the polarization we find in society today e.g. covid, Trump, Brexit etc. Politicians: A “good” politician is not one who gets want he wants. IMHO a good...

    Bringing goods from the EU

There are a number of comments regarding shipping costs from China and the EU but I suspect those observations are based on only economic considerations and little else. It was interesting to watch Mark Carney's recent talks especially the one about the ethics of business practice and it's...

    Possible can of worms

Sorry but I would disagree totally with your ex-pro. The hollow ground bevel has some disadvantages hence the reason the heel is often softened on spindle and bowl gouges. That said there is no real advantage for moving to a flat bevel but if a convex bevel is used there is a major...

    Chuck I.D?

Doesn't look like a Duplex. Looks older than that.

    bowl gouge sizes

USA sizing = diameter of the bar UK sizing = inside of flute on one side to out side of bar on the other side Note: just measuring the diameter of the flute does not allow for the difference flute profiles i.e. U, V, parabolic etc.

Workshop Heater - Request for information.

I can't comment on the sip heater but use a similar heater Inverter Heater which I can program to come on before I get to the workshop so it's warm when I arrive. It's obviously not as powerful as the SIP.

    callipers

It really depends on why you are getting calipers i.e. to ensure the correct size of spigots for chuck jaws, getting the right diameter on a piece of work or checking the wall thickness of a bowl/vessel. For the first 2 tasks the Silverline ones in your link will do you and the ones I always...

Retraining at a (slightly) older age.

I've been following this with interest as I did something similar over 30 years ago; gave up a proper job (paid every month :) ), retrained and became self employed doing something I love. It was a big decision to take with a lot of the considerations mentioned already around finances, material...

    Poolewood 2840

Sounds like the replacement locking lever for the tailstock barrel/quill is not locating in the barrel/quill keyway. If that is the case reduce the end of the locking lever a little with a grinder until it fits in the keyway.

Yes. It's a piece from my signature series.

    Don't try this....

Whilst It is well known that you don't use a spindle roughing gouge on cross grain timber the reason given in this video is not the complete explanation. Yes the profile/grind of the tool isn't appropriate but more importantly the tool is not made to deal with varying grain directions. It is a...
