    New leather stropping block.

Look at the picture and save 800 quid! Looks remarkably like the picture on SRP ;0)

    New leather stropping block.

Only just found it this morn Mignal but speaking for myself I always thought a strop was just a strip or strap of leather and all these compounds were for power tools. So possibly yes a tutorial would have been helpful and less is more. BTW scalpel blades never been sharper, thanks :D

    New leather stropping block.

Good tutorial over on SRP regarding loading strops and you will be amazed how little paste is used. I made the mistake of slathering it on only to end up scraping most of it off and it is messy stuff so I test anything I make on the cardboard from a cornflakes box which makes a pretty good strop...

    Thoughts on the Cretan

Linseed oil? Hasluck says to avoid this but advises Neatsfoot and paraffin. Reckons Turkey stone, when good, is the best but Washita for general use. Must be more texts elsewhere you are thinking of.

    Thoughts on the Cretan

Postage to the UK is 30 Euros but I think that covers up to at least 3 kgs did not try more than that. Why would it be written that these stones are unsuitable for carving tools?

    New leather stropping block.

Just shave a length of Skippy's tail and strop away! Suggest no compound, definitely edge trailing strokes only and get ready to duck..

    Ultex Diamond Stones

I use GT85 on Eze-Laps and also on finer oilstones seems to improve the cut, get it order and collect over the Web from Halfords. Use nothing on my Atoma plate it is only used for water stone flattening so it does get wet but I dry it carefully. Diamond sheet is stuck on to the Atoma base with...

    Another car boot hone.

I found some here http://www.yataganelaletleri.com/catego ... &id_lang=1 at about 3 GBP/kilo that is 80 TL for a 7 kilo+ stone. Shipping says 10 US$ but the translation is a bit vague and yes the stones do come from Turkey but are they the aforementioned Turkish stones?

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

Sharpen up your steak knives between mouthfuls ?

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

So I have heard but roo leather costs a lot of dosh in the UK, strict export controls.

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

I wondered about that as well. I have found that horsehide is harder/tougher than cowhide and for plain leather with no paste kangaroo is good. I mount mine on a mild steel base 75 mm by 300 mm by sticking a magnetic backing to the strop. That way I can interchange strops easily and only need...

    Another car boot hone.

Agreed but it would be interesting finding out. Certainly not advocating filling your car boot up with rocks the locals would get grumpy.

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

I use them a lot for plastic model making and being tight I do sharpen them but I can't say I get them sharper than original. Will check out JK's book later.

    Another car boot hone.

All of them :D I find these natural stones very interesting and not just the finishing stones. No stone quarries in my area it's all clay pits and the car boots are pretty useless.

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

Beautiful work Mignal. I really must try a lot harder or give up with my humble efforts and just how do you get a Swann and Morton scalpel blade sharper?

    Another car boot hone.

Good find! Lots of information here on UK and European stones https://bosq.home.xs4all.nl/info%2020m/ ... part_3.pdf Two other pdfs well worth a read just exchange the part number for a 2 or a 3. Just go and cut your own.....Seem to remember lots of slate just laying around in various areas in...

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

A more refined edge is desirable when your final cuts are the finish I would have thought, carvers are particularly fastidious with their cutting edges. I heard/read that about polished edges lasting longer but I don't know how true it is.

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

According to the book these are just splinters chipped off the way they have done it for thousands of years. Sharp enough and neutral to flesh tissue they are used in eye surgery and for slicing flesh tissue down to 0.1 micron. I don't know but I suppose there are different types of sharp edge...

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

According to a book I have by Rudolf Dick the finest cutting edges measured on a razor were 0.5 microns, the finest edges edges are from obsidian chips which are more than a hundred times thinner and are still used in microtomy. Bit brittle for carpentry though. I like stropping it makes the...

    Chromium oxide bars, or not?

I seem to remember that when you sent metal away for polishing you were asked what colour finish did you want, as in white, yellow, blue etc. All gave a different finish while the finished metal still looked highly polished. Jumping from a 10K stone to a 0.25 micron strop is a big move and will...
