    Sharpening

Sharpening stones were kept in a locked glass top case and only teacher was allowed to use them. Don't know why but theory was taught not the practice. Certainly not rocket science and launching rockets has evolved over centuries as well. He kept his posh Stanley and Norris planes locked up as...

    Sharpening

Five years of woodwork at school and nobody taught us how to sharpen so it was blunt chisels and blunt plane irons. I learnt basic sharpening from my dad and the bloke next door. Fast forward to the 80's and the edge you could get with a waterstone was a revelation and other than an upgrade of...

    Fine Flake Graphite

Use stuff called Dri Slide for tuning air rifles contains Molybdenum and Graphite. Plain pencil rubbed over fishing rod spigots prevents them sticking without attracting dirt. I have heard of it being mixed with mineral oil and used as a strop paste in fact Dovo sell a black stropping paste for...

    bendy cap irons

Both my LNs, one bronze and one iron, have the Bailey style CB and adjustment is a lot smoother than any Stanley/Record I own. I did try the newer LN CB with a 45 degree bevel honed on it but found no advantage. That said a Record #6 I bought from Ray Iles runs them a pretty close second and...

Finish on tools after restoration ?

I have used ACF-50 on motorbikes for years and it works just fine so I have coated the insides and working parts of my metal planes with the stuff. Sort of sets but is not tacky. Chisels and plane irons get a wipe of camellia oil, outsides of planes get waxed.

    HSS Plane blades

Doubt that tools were made higher than 60 RC , the tool makers would know the capabilities of their abrasives and forge/temper accordingly. Waste of time making tools that nobody could sharpen, I would guess anything too hard would have been sold off in the reject bin. Even when SiC and AlOx...

    HSS Plane blades

I have the Smoothcut in 2 5/8" which I think was the same as the Samurai and possibly the same as the blades offered by Stoo. RC was quoted at 65 and they are not HSS Did need flattening but sharpen up well to a very good dependable edge.

    Chisel sharpening

I would grind that chip out and clean the edge up roughly on the bevel side before doing anything further. Often found a void in old chisel blades in that area no idea why.

A couple of microscope edge pictures I took

I had to request replacements twice for my #1200 Ultex plate, both were bent in the middle. New diamond plates cut fast and need to settle in a bit, you can't exactly ease up on the pressure used much because these plates should be used with light pressure only. Personally I would use a hard...

A couple of microscope edge pictures I took

Was this a grind to the edge straight off your CBN setup or did you just touch up the edges with the various stones? Something looks odd a short way in from the Washita edge as if the bevel has a bend/roll in it. Diamond edge does not surprise me deep striations all the way to the edge plus that...

    Renovate natural sharpening stones?

Never seen one used and have no use for one, here's a cheap one http://www.axminster.co.uk/powermatic-3 ... der-102216. No room for tea bags though but you can probably get a tray attachment for a tea pot plus a plate of scones. Real Englishmen use tea leaves not tea bags old boy and you put...

    Renovate natural sharpening stones?

Washitas are no longer mined so unlike an India you can't just bin it and buy another one. If your preference is for natural stones then they are worth saving and the result in the video would give you a stone that should last a lifetime if it is any good. Definitely would not let a diamond...

    Renovate natural sharpening stones?

Looks fast and effective great if you have a stone throughput like yours DW. Have left a number of Washitas in shops that have had that amount of sway, they go for very little money, because flattening them manually is too much like hard work and the neighbours would create something terribly if...

    Renovate natural sharpening stones?

A lot of Charnleys only have one usable side, the other side is just as it was cut out of the solid rock or the stone is fitted so tightly in it's box you would have to wreck the box to get it out. Luckily they are one of the easiest natural stones to flatten and stay flat in use for a good time.

    Renovate natural sharpening stones?

Flatten them. Scrape as much of the crud off then hit them with 80 mesh SiC grit on a flat granite offcut, drop of washing up liquid and a splash of water. Make sure you use all the surface of the granite to keep it nearly flat. Expect a horrible noise until the SiC breaks into smaller particles...

    Preston Infill Smoother

I spoke to him about a month or so ago, I don't think he is very webbed up but he is always there when I have phoned. I did get an O1 4.5 mm blade for my Norris #1 off ebay although I can no longer find the listing, I believe they did 4 mm as well. Measuring up some of the parallel irons I have...

    Preston Infill Smoother

Ray Iles plane irons here https://www.oldtoolstore.co.uk/ Normally I think he likes to have the plane so an iron can be made to fit so some careful measurements on your part will be needed, probably supply a cap iron as well. Any reason why a tapered plane iron can not be used in an infill...

    Wooden hand plane advice?

Never used an infill with an adjuster so no comment. Just imagine years from now all those LV planes that have been battered with hammers when all you need to do is not tighten the lock cap screw too much probably the same as those abused infills. Having said that I do prefer the Bailey lateral...

    Wooden hand plane advice?

That's a Veritas plane and yes it does have a Norris "style" adjuster including the lateral adjustment which actually does work in their BU range, didn't you own one? The Bailey adjuster is the worst piece of engineering I have ever come across the only good things about it is that eventually it...

Record & Stanley, Laminated Plane Irons

I have a few of these laminated Record blades and they are definitely better than the more modern blades. Sharpen up nicely and hold an edge well, only thing is they chip slightly which may clear with a few more sharpening cycles but seems to indicate they are possibly RC60 or higher, they also...
