    Stanley 1960s styling

Three Stanley (GB) models I have here, in addition to the previously mentioned white and yellow highlights also have one with black. They are: No 66 10in Mk 3 Black, 02-131 No 144 - 10 Yellow and No 73 E Mk 4 White. When Stanley came to Australia in 1966 they brought their British rather...

One for the collectors and completists

I have only had an interest in collecting braces and brace tools for about 10 years, and have had to stay focused to not deviate off the chosen path. I have deliberately stayed away from the Marples Ultimatum for the same reason as Andy "too spendy" but they have come down in price massively in...

One for the collectors and completists

I found that an interesting read Andy, have you found a brace by Quimby S. Backus yet? I was amused to read jimi43's comment "somebody who has suffered being called Quimby for his entire life!" For the unfortunately named Quimby things got worse, in about 1903 he entered politics and the...

Unusual Saw - one for Andy.....

Thanks Andy, a quick look found it in Catalogue 4820 from 1948 . Listed as No 344 Low Clearance hacksaw. That's a pretty handy site. Cheers, Geoff.

Unusual Saw - one for Andy.....

I've got one similar, I bought 2nd hand in Tasmania a few years ago thinking it would be handy. Like the one in the Proto catalogue it uses a 10" blade. It is unbranded. I couldn't find a 10" blade anywhere so eventually a jeweller friend cut down a 12" for it. Cheers, Geoff.

Wilson Hawksworth & Ellison Co. Sheffield.

Yes appears as a Gasfitters brace, Buck & Hickman 1935 no manufacturer given though. The links in my original post seem to lean towards a time line of 1856 - 1887. Initially I thought it a bit large for a surgeons brace but in comparison not that big a difference really. Unfortunately I don't...

Sorry, I put the & in the wrong place, should read Wilson Hawksworth Ellison & Co. Sheffield. Geoff.

Wilson Hawksworth & Ellison Co. Sheffield.

G'day, I recently purchased this nice little 7" brace from the USA. It's branded Wilson Hawksworth & Ellison Co. Sheffield with quite prominent padlock trademark. Also C & M 85 is more heavily punched into it. I wondered if the C&M may have something to do with their address at Carlisle Works...

    Second Hand/Old Socket Sets

Here in Aus' No1 would be Sidchrome but I've also seen Gedore and King Dick. I have broken a socket once, I wasn't abusing it and a big chunk cracked out the side. I took it back to the dealer and eventually a replacement arrived along with a note from Sidchrome advising me not to use a...

Unknown Sheffield Chisel - 7 Letters - Tree or Clover Stamp

I have a nice set of Mawhood Irwin pattern auger bits from 1/4" to 1" sadly missing the 9/16" bit. The canvas roll has no markings on it. I hadn't done any research on Mawhood so thanks for the above information. I have used the candle smoke method to identify a hard to read brand and find it...

Cleaning up a corner drill brace

Well I look forward to seeing it when you finish refurbishing it. Geoff.

Cleaning up a corner drill brace

Hello Gizz, Your drill brace appears to be missing the centre part of the universal joint or have you left it out of the photo? I've attached a photo of my Amidon & White D/B and can give more details if you require. Who was yours made by? Cheers, Geoff.

    Another “what’s that for” thread

The first one you posted should work fine on mild steel. The second on leather, cork or other gasket material. Cheers, Geoff.

    Another “what’s that for” thread

Yes Memzey, washer cutter it is. I've got one like this and mine has Pat No 423259 stamped on the shank but no makers name on it. It was patented by W A Smith and F W Francis of Birmingham in 1935. https://worldwide.espacenet.com/publica ... 3259A&KC=A Cheers, Geoff.

    Tool ID.

We were discussing tank cutters earlier in the week and I posted a photo of this one. I think it's British made but has a brand that I don't recognise so I'm hoping some one can give me some info. The brand WOODHURST is arched in the middle. This is the only mark on it any clues? Cheers, Geoff.

    Another “what’s that for” thread

This topic has raised another query in my mind. You will see that Memsey's tank cutter has the cutting edge on the inner side of the cutter where the one I have attached here is on the outer. Memsey's would appear to cut with the clean edge on the inside as in making a washer, whereas mine would...

    Another “what’s that for” thread

It's a slippery slope Memzey, but there are not enough brace tool collectors in the world. Here are some of my tank and washer cutters. Cheers, Geoff.

    Another “what’s that for” thread

I haven't seen one quite like that before. I guess the square collar above the cutter with the thumb screw is wedge shaped and locks the cutter bar at the required radius. I'm also guessing there's a grub screw on the other side that holds the drill bit? It would be nearly 50 years since I used...
