    Poor man's Joint Master?

 Nothing like a bit of experimentation to discover the truth. I am finding there is a lot more resistance from the Western saw blade. I think the wider kerf and thicker blade are the culprits. The original jointmaster in action appears to offer very little resistance. No need to reinvent...

    Poor man's Joint Master?

Where is the law about turning a saw around? A Japanese saw is pulled only because it is thin and would buckle if pushed. A western saw can be pushed because it thicker and has a reinforced spine. So if you turn the Western saw around you can use it like a pull saw. Incidentally, thanks for the...

    Poor man's Joint Master?

The reason about the saw was because it occurred to me that it was only a pull saw because of its orientation and I thought a western saw with a more robust blade might actually fair better than a thin Japanese saw exactly because it was not being pulled. The work is pushed along the saw blade...

    Poor man's Joint Master?

Great report. Why did you use a Japanese saw in your poor mans version? Wouldn't a western saw that you could resharpen work just as well? I can see why bridge city tools used a Japanese saw because they want to sell replacements and most people wanting a jog like this probably don't want the...

    Marking Knife

I recently ordered a Narex marking knife, it holds a good edge and only has a bevel on one side so it is perfect for cutting veneers too. For left and right handed use. Workshopheaven sell them in the UK.

    Rasps from Portugal

I said I would report back on performance after a while. The rasps are still performing very well. I am starting to wonder why I bought so many now. Well I know why. Every rasp I had every picked up before in a workshop had been a dud. So I assumed they wore out more quickly than standard files...

    Curly maple

I recently experimented with a few finishes for accentuating quilted maple without darkening it. This should also work for curly maple in the kitchen too, where shellac is not really practical. accentuating-quilted-maple-without-darkening-appearance-t91914.html Hope this proves of some use to you.

    Gerard's Vice Trick

Extended cheeks is good suggestion for avoiding the tommy bar getting in the way. Don't you lose clamping pressure if you make the jaws too wide? Quick release vices do not have the same issues with the random position of the tommy bar and so my magnet trick is not necessary for holding the bar...

    Gerard's Vice Trick

The steering wheels look very nice. I was after a quick fix and not everyone has the skills to retrofit a vice. I thought my explanation was clear and the people who 'got' it all seem to be people who use hand tools. If you rarely, if ever, use a vice you might not get it - but why would you...

    Gerard's Vice Trick

Hi Oakmitre, Brilliant I have saved another woodworking soul. I don't think it is surprising that you had not thought of this. It has taken me more than 30 years to discover it #-o

    Gerard's Vice Trick

Hi Phil, Yes that is another way to accomplish the same thing. I would probably have tried that if I had seen described somewhere. The only problem with elastic bands is that they perish after a while. A magnet just sits there sliding to wherever you put it on the bar for as long as you want.

    Gerard's Vice Trick

Hello Bob, As you rip down a longer piece of wood you pass the turning point of the tightening bar and depending on width of the work piece the tightening bar is at a different angle each time. Often the tightening bar gets in the way of your hand. Now you can push it out of the way without it...

    Gerard's Vice Trick

For longer than I care to remember I have been frustrated vice bars that get in the way of my hand sawing. Today, while sawing, it occurred to me how to rectify this problem once and for all. Since I have never seen this described anywhere else I thought I would share it with the world of...

    Tool chest indecision

Thanks for the tip about the Jim Tolpin book. Always nice to add a little more indecision to the design. I'll check out a copy.

    Tool chest indecision

Thanks you for all your suggestions. I had considered creating compartments in the tills for chisels to stop them rolling around to protect the edges as I have already encountered that problem. I have a lot of moulding planes that had planned to store in the bottom area. The Dutch style chest...

    Tool chest indecision

Sometimes I wish I could just trust someone else's plans and build something they had designed and yet I know that if I do not research a new project properly and integrate at least a good proportion of my own ideas I will end up stewing in dissatisfaction. On my travels through books and the...

    Shellac flakes

Dissolving your own flakes in alcohol is much preferable to buying premixed, because you know how long ago it has been mixed. It is very easy to do and is such an integral part of French polishing and applying shellac I would not be intimidated by it. You can leave the flakes to dissolve in...

    Marking Walnut

I use tailor's/dressmaker's chalk for marking walnut. It is usually a flat square or triangle and you can sharpen the edge to give you a very fine line. I have never had a probleem removing the marks afterwards.
