    Make your own hand router

Thanks for the idea of putting a mark on the front Jim. I was pleased with your comment about how it worked, it is so very easy to overlook a detail. Yes Matthew, other lathe tools with different widths would be an option for someone building a router with that in mind. I however did not have...

    Make your own hand router

Hi Jim, The pictures show the cutter retracted. As it is lowered is protrudes not only downwards but also forward. I can see what you mean as the cutter on most routers sticks out futher at the front but this does not seem to effect how this router works. The advantage of a router cutter that...

    Make your own hand router

I was inspired by Pauls Sellers' blog about the poorman's router. Then a couple of days later he posted the 'not so poorman's router' again with instructions for building it. I was all fired up now at the idea of saving 30 quid plus on a hand router off ebay that I set to work. Paul Sellers...

My first boxes up for critique......

Nicely finished boxes! But you knew that already. I agree that designing a box that ends up a dust trap will not show off the lid in the long term. Is that why so many boxes used to have curved lids? With regard to the comments about the purple heart fading, they are true but if kept away from...

What is the best adhesive for lignum vitea?

Thanks Jim, The lemonwood looks very similar to the lignum vitea so I am sure it will look good oiled too. Nice pieces in the photographs. Thanks again for your help

What is the best adhesive for lignum vitea?

I think I will have a go at a mechanical bond, degreased and then a smear of pva just for good measure. I can leave the top for a couple of weeks before I try and actually use it for the box top. I just could not resist the vibrant green colour when I picked it up, it has a very pungent...

What is the best adhesive for lignum vitea?

I want to glue the lignum vitea to a length of lemon wood and rosewood to make a lid for a box. Sounds horendous :D . The lignum vitea will be glued edge to edge with the lemon and rosewood and the planks are about 12mm thick. It is not going to be under a tremendous amount of strain but I would...

What is the best adhesive for lignum vitea?

I noticed the Lignum Vitea I recently picked up has a slightly oiled like feel to it, more so than teak. Can I just use a white pva for glueing Lignum vitea or does it need something else or different treatment prior to glueing?

    Drum Sander envy

At long last my drum sander is finally working properly. The velour backed sand paper stays in place properly on the velcro backing and it can even handle taking off 0.5 mm in a single pass with 100 grade sandpaper. It was always my intention to use this machine as a thicknesser and when I was...

Axminster No. 9 1/2 Block Plane Wow!

Some pictures with the adjuster removed and after filing the slot to allow the mouth to close up nice and tight. Just look at the dust on the little devil, it is getting plenty of use. The blade is holding its edge nicely too.

    Drum Sander envy

Now I have managed to take some new pictures at last. You can see I have installed a smaller diametre pulley. The velcro is stuck to the drum. Abrasive is attached to the velcro. Test run later this evening. :D

Axminster No. 9 1/2 Block Plane Wow!

The blade looks like a Stanley model blade it is 110mm by 41mm and 2.9mm thick. But as I don't have a Stanley original to compare I cannot guarantee the Ray Ilses blade will fit. Although I am fairly sure that this is an exact copy of a Stanley block plane.

Axminster No. 9 1/2 Block Plane Wow!

Just put down my new Axminster No. 9 1/2 Block Plane and I have to recommend it to anyone looking for a block plane. It is superb and at the money they are asking an absolute steal. I have bid on many vintage Stanley models at 3 and 4 times the price on ebay and missed out each time. So I...

    Ebay chisels

    A 1/16th is 1.5mm an 1/8th is 3mm.

    Ebay chisels

I have had a Ashley Ilses 1/16 inch dovetail chisel for 3 months. It is really superb. I now have 5 AI s and another on order (different sizes). I am amazed how long the little chisel holds it's edge. It is one of those chisels that once I have picked it up to use it that I have to stop myself...

    Drum Sander envy

The smaller pulley is installed, the direction of rotation has now been fixed, just waiting for the Velcro and velour backed abrasive to arrive. I have decide to give this system a try over the clamping the abrasive. All the plans and instructions recommend this way to attach the abrasive and...

Fix for broken cast iron cap iron on an old spoke shave

Today while sharpening a blade in an old Stanley spoke shave I decided to true up the cap iron by making sure the rough cast side of the iron was flat along the edge where it supports the blade. After just a couple of strokes across some emery paper it cracked right down the middle #-o (I...

Narex Chisels - lots of photos

I received half a dozen chisels from Workshop Heaven today. 4 more Ashley Ilses dovetail chisels and 2 Narex bevel edge. I really like the dovetail chisels which is why I added to the couple I already had, but I wanted some bevel edge chisels that I could really hit with a hammer when chopping...

My Inca bandsaw is not direct drive either I have a 1960s hoover motor ,built in Scotland, driving mine. Is your machine a kity perhaps? I have been told that Inca were actually a company specialised in high quality die casting machinery and when a customer who had ordered a whole production...

    Jacob

Hope Jacob makes a speedy recovery and I just hope that surgeon is using Sheffield steel (fortunately most scapels are still made in Sheffield and there is one with a rounded tip).
