Suggestions for a woodworking lathe tool set for a beginner

The Faithfull set is a poorly chosen set in my view. Two scrapers, two spindle roughing gouges, and two skew chisels (one of each is adequate to start off) but no bowl gouges. Phil's five, above, is good; perhaps plus a scraper and you'll be in a position to try most things. Duncan

    Camvac exhaust silencer hoses?

Buy one hose from Charnwood (cheaper than Record Power), cut in half, attach to Camvac, put socks over the ends, and direct away from work area Duncan

    Platter Blanks

Andy Harrison in Burton Latimer was always very obliging when I went to his place. His website looks somewhat moribund but it can do no harm to contact him. http://aharrisonwoodturning.co.uk/ Duncan

    Diamond Belt sticks against plate?

The diamond belt does look rather thick but, if it's not touching the tool platform as suggested above, I'd try adjusting the belt tension with the eccentric adjuster right at the top centre of your picture. If it is touching, I'd put shims under the tool platform before grinding the platform...

Circlips - what's the magic secret?

Good quality circlip pliers are vastly superior to cheap ones so get Knipex or similar if you're struggling with poor quality ones. Duncan

    jacubs chuck

Must confess, I hadn't thought of using a pin chuck but perhaps that's because my usual drlil chuck for lathe use goes down to 1mm so the issue only arises on those rare occasions that I want to use a 1mm drill in my pillar drill. The pillar drill chuck only goes down to 3mm. A minor annoyance...

    jacubs chuck

If you plump for a 16mm chuck make sure it will hold a 1mm drill bit. Some only go down to 3mm, which is annoying at times. Chronos or RDG are good for such things. Duncan

    JT3 chuck removal wedge?

As per Bushwhacker, buy or make a drill drift. Lower the drill until the slot in the quill is exposed, insert drift until it contacts the top of the chuck Arbor, hold the chuck in your hand, and give the drift a smart whack with a hammer. The chuck and Arbor will drop into your hand

Turning old farm building into workshop

Depends on the size of wood that you are cutting. Most 14" bandsaws would do the job for you I would imagine, but second hand is the way to go and bigger is always better...

Turning old farm building into workshop

I know nothing about this sort of work, but would a basic bandsaw speed up those joints. Needn't cost much and could be sold on if no longer required.

Using a skew with one hand behind your back!

Look him up on YouTube - he makes a living working very fast, very accurately, with minimum tool changes. He really is extraordinarily good

    Harrogate reviews

I'm baffled by the bench grinder sharpening system "offer" Usual price for grinder £110 Usual price for RS 447 jig £165 Usual Total for both £275 These prices are pretty much anywhere other than Turners Retreat where they are claiming that the grinder is usually £275 and the total is £440...

    Hydraulic pressure dial replacement?

Aaaargh! I wasn't ready to post that! Anyway, I don't know why the numbers from the gauge come out so different to Sideways calculations. It's almost as if the "Metric tons" are actually USA short tons (2000 lbs) not tonnes (2204 lbs) or UK long tons (2240 lbs). I'll shut up now before I confuse...
