New Axminster Tools & Machinery Web Site Launched!

The website is faster and, for me at any rate, the search is no worse than the previous website i.e. too many returns that were not asked for and no apparent way of filtering. Overall I find the appearance clearer. The password reset is pretty bad - and if it is unavaoidable, a temporary...

    Respirator advice

Reg, Don't discount the positive pressure respirators such as the 3M Versaflo, Scott Tornado, JSP Jetstream, Sundstrom SR 500. They are expensive but can sometimes be picked up on eBay quite cheaply. They are very effective and surprisingly convenient to use. I bought my Sundstrom on eBay for...

    Yew hollow form

Stunning! Personally I like it with no foot - keeps the lines clean Duncan

    Jet 18" Bandsaw Caution

As promised, Bob from Brimarc turned up today to look at my bandsaw and spent nearly two hours with me. He was very helpful and managed to avoid laughing at a couple of instances of numptiness on my part, and kindly passed on a few tips once the main business was done - despite the fact that he...

    Jet 18" Bandsaw Caution

Nick - PM sent. Yes, an excellent response from Nick; especially as I did not raise it through official channels. I'll post an update here after Brimarc have been round for a look. Duncan

    Jet 18" Bandsaw Caution

I've had a Jet JWBS 18Q bandsaw for some time but not used it for deep cuts until recently - whereupon it started making all sorts of strange noises. This turned out to be due to the blade upper cover plate, which slides up and down to keep the blade covered. When the guides are raised to their...

    Everest front door, £4,250?!!

Yes but the offer only stands for one week, then it goes up to its full price! Duncan

Bandsaw Blade Wobble - Back and forth?

Cheerup Assuming you have checked that the two wheels are co-planar: Take the blade off and turn the wheels by hand (the top wheel will drop down but that's not a problem) What is wobbling - the wheel, or the tyre? If the wheel is wobbling, you may have bearing or spindle damage. If the tyre...

    Finally some good shots

When is a Vase a Bowl?

I can see that end grain on the side of a vase could cause a lot of problems but it may be worth trying a bowl with end grain on the bottom, just to see how it turns out ...and of course the heartwood wouldn't cause problems with a lampshade so may also give that a go in due course. Duncan

When is a Vase a Bowl?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think the flowers falling over is as good a test as any! Pete, you mention strength, which I wondered about - especially as simply taking a log and hollowing it out across the majority of its diameter would leave the pith in the centre. I have some ash rounds...

When is a Vase a Bowl?

Possibly a silly question this, but here goes. Vases are usually made with the grain in line with the axis, but bowls are usually made with the grain perpendicular to the axis. Why is this? Looking at Soren Berger's wooden lampshade video on the link posted by EnErY yesterday, I found myself...

    Been Busy

Dalboy, Neil Many thanks for the tealight holder shops. There's a Wilkinson just up the road from me; if they don't have any, looks like a trip to MK. Duncan

    Been Busy

All good stuff, the cherry bowl is my favourite as well. Dalboy, where do you get the glass inserts from; they look like just the sort of thing I've been looking for. Duncan

    PVA Log Sealer

I'm on my way to Toolstation! Duncan

    PVA Log Sealer

Thanks for the replies folks. I perhaps should have explained the scale of the "problem". There are around 40 rounds, of about 500 - 600mm dia, ranging from 150 to 300mm thickness. They were cut about 6 months ago so some already have splits and, in an ideal world, I should split the rounds...

    PVA Log Sealer

Many members use PVA for sealing logs and turning blanks - but what sort of PVA? Do members use PVA wood glue, which could work out expensive in large quantities, or is it the cheaper PVA sealer and bonding agent commonly used by builders? I need to know as I've just acquired a quantity of ash...

Trump Brothers power saw restoration wip - now working!

Hi Andy Regarding the Whitworth threads, on an American machine they are most likely to be UNC which has the same tpi as BSW up to 1/2" so can be considered interchangeable despite having a slightly different profile. I think I've seen a discussion of this interchangeability on UKW in the past...

cubic metres to cubic feet conversion table

I've used this for some years now, far more than just a metric converter: http://www.esbconsult.com/esbcalc/esbunitconv.htm I also use Norgren Tools from www.norgren.com. Not sure if it is still on their website but I can email it if anyone wants to give it a try. Duncan

    True or false?

Regarding the 18V Makita Li-ion batteries it would seem that those bought a few years ago had a problem if not charged regularly. In brief, the internal electronics drained one cell and then refused to allow charging of the "unbalanced" battery. The newer ones have a star on them - indicating...
