    Rcd tripping

Some VFDs have a small RF filter which can be a source of earth leakage, and may be designed for disconnecting by the simple removal of a screw. Obviously, this needs to be explained in a decent manual before inserting the screwdriver! Your lathe may not have a proper VFD manual but, if you can...

    Tissue for lathe work

Paper napkins from better restaurants are excellent, I find - soft, multi layer, strong but will tear in the event of a catch. If I run out I'll try to buy them from a catering supplier such as Nesbitt

Total beginner just bought an old Arundel J4 I think Junior as its 55 inch long-some help please!

Get some woodturning tools; woodcarving tools are not designed for turning and can be dangerous. As a minimum, you need a face mask and visor to protect you from harm - particularly as you are starting out and likely to make mistakes. Read the book, and join a woodturning club if there's one...

Workzone HBS20 Bandsaw blade and tyre won’t stay on

I agree with what Fergie307 said - change the tyres However, what have you got to lose by trying some adhesive first? Just a bit of your time if you've already got some glue. I would also inspect the bottom wheel for any cracks - extremely unlikely but why not make sure before splashing cash on...

Finding a chuck for old Sherline wood lathe. 9/16 12 Whitworth.

The picture may be misleading, but the unthreaded portion of the spindle looks as if it is a greater diameter than the thread. If so, it may be best to have a sleeve made to screw onto the spindle and with an external thread to suit a "standard" chuck thread. Since the OP has made it clear that...

Axminster Perform CCBL Banjo issues - too short! Suggestions please.

If buying a new toolrest, are you sure the toolpost diameter is 25mm? It may well be 25.4mm (1"). If so it would be a nicer fit in whatever banjo you end up with. Duncan

Choosing the most appropriate grinder for this job

That makes sense. I did read somewhere that anything above Rockwell hardness 45 should be OK but that was a very old post. Also came across a comment that a dirty or clogged wheel would clean itself through normal use over time - and there are cleaning stones of course.

Choosing the most appropriate grinder for this job

https://www.shentonwoodcraft.co.uk were selling a slow speed 8" grinder with CBN wheels at Daventry Woodworks recently. Price seemed quite good but there's nothing on his website at present - about £500 for the grinder and two CBN's I think. He sells his own sharpening jigs; somewhat cheaper...

    Lilac wood

It may depend upon exactly which variety it is but my experience is that it is a lovely creamy wood with pink to blood red heartwood. Like many woods, the colour will fade over time but still an attractive wood that turns well - if you can stop it cracking! Very often, it becomes available when...

    Changing grinder wheels

Personally, it would drive me nuts, all that faffing around. It should be safe enough, done with care, but, as ChaiLatte points out, you may well have to true the wheels up after every change, even marking them and always installing in the same place as he suggests. I would seriously consider...

    Vacuum Pump recommendations

In brief: Vacuum generators require an air compressor to be running. Noisy, and can use a lot of electricity but should be able to generate near enough 100% vacuum, not that that is necessary or always desirable for a vacuum chuck. Rotary vane vacuum pumps are generally quiet and small and...

How not to drill a pen blank or turning your jacobs chuck into a hammer!

As well as not holding the chuck, he was feeding the drill in by sliding the tailstock, rather than by using the handwheel. If the tailstock is free to slide, it's also free to wobble which may have loosened the arbor. He also drilled in a long way before withdrawing the tailstock to clear the...

A bit wider... but how much? Drilling template, one round, one elongated hole

Do as is commonly found on window blind brackets. One vertical elongated hole and one horizontal elongated hole. At a guess I'd say the holes are about twice as long as they are wide. Duncan
