    Finishing aluminium inlaid chessboard

Unless you have no option, or the job is already done, just buy anodised, and that's that! : ) If you're stuck I work with anodised sheet all week long - i buy multiple 8x4 sheets of it at once - I'm sure I could saw a bit off for you.

    Engraving advice needed

(thank you) Have you seen some of that acid etched stuff that crops up now and again? Its personal taste, and some may think it looks a bit too punk, but i really like it (not that ive done any myself!) If you dont need square holes, than a drill press will do the holes for you, and then...

    Engraving advice needed

Here is a job I did for a chap in, I think, Finland - I only did the metal work, nothing else. Another option is laminated paper overlays. It just depends on your money to finish ratio. You can do nice looking DIY stuff in various ways. ...whilst im at it, i may as well show off some...

    Engraving advice needed

How many do you need to do? And how good do you want them to look? If you only want to do a few, and you want them to look good, just outsource. If you dont care too much what they look like, then any cheap machine will make you some bad looking parts. Or if you want to do loads, and want...

Best way to remove paint from cast iron bench ends

To strip paint you need flesh melting concentration of caustic. You don't need anywhere close to that for rust. You may want to apply the caustic directly maybe with a binder, and then use a dip tank with lower concentration for the rust? I mean you can do them both at once, but you would...

Best way to remove paint from cast iron bench ends

I actually have a bench power supply doing mine, rather than a battery charger... It will work at low amps but quicker at higher. My psu is said to be 8.5 amps, and has a thermal overload switch. So all I do is keep increasing the volts until it starts to shut down, and then back off a bit...

Best way to remove paint from cast iron bench ends

Really, if you're going to use a caustic bath, find your old (non smart) battery charger and give electrolysis a go. I've spent so long in the past with wire wheels and that, but now I know about electrolysis, I'd never bother with them. The finish is so much better from electrolysis too...

Refitting Wadkin cast iron spindle moulder table.

Maths, or, of course, just your favourite cad app... : )

Refitting Wadkin cast iron spindle moulder table.

You might be able to reduce your trial and error time with some maths. If the table was bolted down with no shims, just on 3 corners, you could take some measurements, and use, umm, geometry(?) to work out where to shim.

Best way to remove paint from cast iron bench ends

If you search dichloro-methane on eBay, you can buy it in 5ltr containers. It's volitile, and, without the thickner that the "paint strippers" have, it won't be loads easy to use, especially as you won't want to get it on you, and it will eat through most PPE. A curiosity is that it's not...

Best way to remove paint from cast iron bench ends

Would they fit in a 200ltr barrel? If so, find a plastic barrel, fill it with water, and dump in a load of caustic soda. When you're done, it may still be good for getting rid of the neighbours / your hands / your eyesight / etc. For bonus points connect up a sacrificial anode and use...

    Moving Large Machines

A mechnics engine crane is an awkward tool to store when not in use, but they're not expensive, and are great for lifting things on and off trailers - even if you have to man handle the trailer under the load rather than try and move it on the crane. Once somthing is on the floor, scaffold bar...

Biomass power stations " good idea or not"

You are talking about a power generation pathways that is in its early stages. Was it not clear that I was mentioning similar methods, that are moving along the cycle, to demonstrate development that may have not been obvious to the layperson from the offset?

Biomass power stations " good idea or not"

I visited the hinkley b site, in the run up to hinkley c final approval. This was in the whole "will she, won't she" phase, where there was still a pretence of doubt. All I can say is that there was a *lot* of money being spent on the C site considering we were being told that the decision had...

Biomass power stations " good idea or not"

I should note that biomass is not just about burning wood. For example anaerobic digestion running off supermarket waste is also an interesting concept, all be it, also in "somewhat dubious" mode at present, with fields of maize being grown simply to feed to the reactors. My own car is about...

Biomass power stations " good idea or not"

I used to pick up sawdust from a local place in dumpy bags in a trailer, and was set up for burning it. Just due to time / distance etc. i stopped doing it, but if someone was generating a load of (non-mdf) sawdust next door, id happily take it again. If youre generating a load, and its...

Biomass power stations " good idea or not"

Biomass is in its infancy. Certainly there's some crazy stuff going on at present, but id like to think it will be short(ish) term, and, after a while, things will settle down. If you want a comparison, the nuclear industry didnt even care about generating electricity for decades and decades -...

Would a cast table saw top make a good router table start?

If / when my Wadkin AGS gets sorted, I may have a spare cast iron top. Someone suggested to me that it would make a good router table part, but did not elaborate any further. What so you think? Basically it's a lump of cast with a couple of mitre slots and a hole? I can weld up a stand easy...

INCRA Miter Gauge 1000SE retailer? (or anyone selling used?)

There are a few comments that the stop (for length, rather than angle) is awkward - this function (repeat cutting of lengths to the same dimensions) is more important to me than angles at the moment. Can you let me know how the incra compares to the Osborne in this way? From the you tube...

INCRA Miter Gauge 1000SE retailer? (or anyone selling used?)

Thank you. Can i ask you why you went for the HD, vs the SE? The cost difference is nothing, so i was choosing just on what i thought was better, and shortlisted the SE. I figured that they could both, ultimatly, do the same, but that for 99% of work (ie usual angles) the SE would be quicker...
