Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

And here is a quick photo of the fence rails - Older saw - Newer saw - I realise one is metric and the other imperial, but i cant think they swapped away from the brass insert for anything other than financial reasons! Which makes me think some about the mechanisms also - i mean...

Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

Some of the oddities that i mentioned elsewhere : So there is the 50s saw - The "locking plate" on the rise and fall mechanism on the 50s unit seems to be a cast lump - (youre looking at the part with the three bolts on at the bottom) The arbor side looks like this - you see the two...

Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

Thank you - ill have a read of that in a bit. I have a whole box of decent castors, but i was concerned about a way of locking the saw in place also. Ive not yet read the thread you link to, so possibly its covered there...

    Dewalt 1251 RAS.

I've always had a bit of a love / hate relationship with my dw125 I mean it seems like it should do so very much, and it kind of can, but it's a constant battle with accuracy. I think that, if you had the space, to set it in a large sturdy table would be the solution. I thought about making...

    Power belt sanding file

Maybe it's just the belts people use? As I say, mine will grind its way through mild steel just fine. I spent a while welding up a replacement bulkhead for my landrover 110 and it was my go to tool. Nicer to use that a grinder with a flap disc. I used it for shaping plates for inserting and...

    Power belt sanding file

I've got a black and decker one. About 40 quid delivered l. I've never really use it on wood, but I use it in ferrous metal a lot. I think it's a superb tool for the money. If I lost it, I'd buy another without consideration. I only use the blue zirconia (spelling?) belts with it. They...

    Adjustable vs Fixed Spanners

If you're working on somthing with good access, then, sure, an adjustable will do the job. But if you're bending yourself into some convoluted space with only one arm even close to the fastener (that you probably can't even see any more!) then you really don't want to have an adjustable in...

I have been offered one of these...

I think it may be one of those ones that ill regrett not buying if i dont. Its cheap enough that cost isnt a consideration. Its just the space, and that i was planning on selling my existing saw through lack of use. Indeed, i suspect that may be the only way ill be able to convince my...

I have been offered one of these...

Quite possibly. The reason i spotted it was that i went to pick up another tool, that was also in bits, with some parts missing / lost over time, so this one might have had the same cause. Im slowly getting into metal casting. If i could find an original part to copy, then it wouldnt be so...

I have been offered one of these...

I could weld up my own guard if i just wanted a functional one, but the original is cast. Like i say, im more into the aesthetics of the item than the function. ...which probbaly means i shouldnt get it anyway! (but im still thinking about it)

I have been offered one of these...

To explain - I was at a chaps place who was selling up to collect another item, and spotted the saw. I dont need a bandsaw, and was even thinking of selling my existing bandsaw, as i never use it (warco). But this one caught my eye. Its proper old cast, with almost art-deco styling. Its a...

Wadkin AGS trunnion design change - why?

This should be in my AGS10 thread, but it's a question that is like greater exposure for - I have two AGS saws, one from 1958 and one from the 70s. I realised last night that the trunnion assemblies are very different. The older saw seems to have fewer parts (but more grub screw type slack...

Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

So, i have now realised that my 1958 saw has a different trunnion assembly to my original 1970s saw. Ill take photos tomorrow. I wonder why they changed things - if it was an economic choice or an engineering one. I now see how to get the assembly out of the 1958 saw, but the screw that locks...

Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

Yes, i spotted that - it looks like its sprung? Either the spring in mine is very tough (as in i cant compress the plunger by hand) or its failed, and seized at compresson. I dont entirely understand what its for? Currently trying to work out how much of the trunnion assembly has to come...

Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

This is the base of the replacement saw - I cant think that is the original paint work, as its in too good condition, but its certainly the right colour for the period. Im not going to mess about with it. I dont need shiny tools - just ones that work as they should. Moving on to the...

Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

I have not yet received the AGS250 top that was mentioned above, as a friend is picking it up in person for me. As a result of today's "find", in hindsight, it may not have been necessary, but, what ill do is get a working unit out of these two that i have currently, and then make a decision on...

Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

This is the plate on todays unit - In contrast to the one on my damaged saw - I think that makes the "new" (to me) one to be a 1958 build, vs the 1976 green one. In truth i did not even know they came in colours other than green, but the paint on the '58 one looks original.

Another Wadkin AGS 10 restoration thread.

Update time! Todays haul - Its incomplete, but, between my existing damaged saw, and this one, i should have pretty much everything. I also purchased the ags250 top / fence that was mentioned above, but i dont have it yet (its miles away, and a friend is due to pick it up on his way past) -...

Pete, Do you have your graphics sorted? Is this a single panel (or everything behind one large panel) or lots of small bits? Or is it just hypothetical at the moment?
