    Totally agree however if a total newbie buys one, blunts it and has no idea how to fettle and sharpen it will end in tears

    Old Stanley, £50 max to buy and fettle, A new LAJ from LN £300 will work str8 from the box but will still need fettling to be 100% Being a newbie myself I would rather go down learning and sorting on an old school unit and then depending on funds and if I felt necessary buy a new one ...

    Game Changing Tools

    Can I add, becoming older and wiser ( i have often been called a tool ) so think i qualify ! Years ago i just couldn't manage to sort a hand plane and get it to actually cut with any success, unable to sharpen it or set it up. I think with age we gain the personal skills we need to progress...

    Right then, re ground 30' reassembled bevel down, and in all fairness it works a treat, however as there is no real means of adjusting the depth of cut so it's all a bit hit and miss! But it does work so bonus

    Looking at the ground edge of the blade I guess I need to give it more "licks" on 1000g side to get it really smooth and get rid of the ridges then strop it more. The shavings arnt bad ribbons but split in places which I guess is the minute ridges on the blade.

    Well, a bit of progress today and aching arms! Took ages on the 300 diamond stone and then on the 1000 other side, I used a honing guide as am obv a novice and got the angle as close to 25' as poss. Result? Well it cuts not bad to be fair. Had a bit of trouble keeping the edge of the blade...

    Stanley Rule & Level Co on the top of the blade so deffo bevel down which mine is at prob 45' so need to get myself back in garage later!

    Been trying to identify its age all I can see is 014 on the base plate & QC 37 of the blade support with a raised ring around the handle https://cloud.woodandshop.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/stanley-bailey-handplane-type-study-flow-chart.pdf Not sure if I'm getting things right but does...
