Whats the thoughts on this type of belt/disc sander

I have the Axminster version of that machine. Agree with the comments about the table supports. Otherwise, it works well, the dust extraction is good. I’ve mounted mine on a cabinet with a rotating top (on a lazy susan bearing) that makes it easy to choose either belt or disc. One essential...

Using a hacksaw cutting big(gish) stuff. Or how to saw a railway line.

The blade fixing at the handle end pivots about the upper rivet, and is locked in place with a knurled screw. You can’t put much tension on the blade, as the saw plate then bends. Not sure how effective it would be for Dave’s application, but it works well for long cuts in sheet materia.

Using a hacksaw cutting big(gish) stuff. Or how to saw a railway line.

I actually have one of those, bought donkey’s years ago by my father for cutting Formica. It takes standard 12” blades.

    Digital callipers.

I’ve been using various cheap digital calipers for, must be, 10 years. As Yorkieguy says, the 1.55V alkaline cells ( a pound a sheet at poundland) are a waste of time; the same-size silver oxide cells are more expensive but last much longer. But there’s a better solution: you can find calipers...

Advice needed : repair walking cane

A Amazon have these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07T4Y3CMJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I’ve got some on order, but they’re still on the rowing boat from China. Otherwise, I have used the diamond abrasive masonry/tile bits, but the smoke is a bit annoying. I’ve...

Share your 3D Printed Tools and Jigs

I’ve had good results with Amazon Eono PLA+, and eSun PLA+. PLA+ is a mixture of PLA and another polymer (PET, if I remember correctly) that prints at similar temperatures to PLA but is a bit more resilient and a bit less brittle than PLA.

    Preparing fence panels

I’ve always avoided the water-based products such as Duck’s Back. Where I’ve seen them used, they don’t seem particularly durable, and they look shabby as they age. I’d second flying haggis’s recommendation and use the Barrettine Timber Protector. You can apply it with a garden pump sprayer -...

    Water Softeners drinking softened water

No, the resin in the softener exchanges sodium for calcium, so the softened water has a high(er) sodium concentration. Over time, the resin becomes saturated with calcium ions, at which point it us necessary to regenerate it by supplying a large excess of sodium ions that then replace the calciuml

Did you see the report that boilers sales are to stop 2025

In fact, the energy extracted by a GSHP is principally solar - the sun warms the earth. And large areas are not required. We heat 270m^2 of house off about 300m^2 of garden by using bore holes. Designed properly, the effect on the ground temperature is negligible, as the thermal conductivity...

Did you see the report that boilers sales are to stop 2025

That’s not strictly true, Phil. About 9 years ago, we built a new house. It’s timber framed, with plenty of foam insulation in the walls, lots of mineral wool in the tiny roof space, but only ordinary double glazing. It’s about 270 m^2 (3000 square feet, in old money). We heat it with a...

Table saw with 19 mm T slots

I have a Scheppach HS105 table saw that has a cast Al top, with 19mm mitre slots. I’m happy with it, after some initial fettling - I’ve not got the space (or the money!) for the next level up. Good-quality blades are really the key.

    Furniture scriber branding outcome.

Just one critical question, Phil. Is it CNC machined from aircraft-grade aluminium? If not, I couldn’t even consider using one!!;)

    A general DRO question

I recently fitted a single DRO to the fence of my table saw. Got it from https://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/ who have a good range at reasonable prices.

    Router tables

I have the (sorry in advance) Xact router and lift from Rutland. I added a Musclechuck, and modified the motor to remote the speed control pot (my background is electronic engineering), both to avoid grovelling around under the table. I’d bought the kit before I became aware of Peter Sefton’s...

Moving 18mm sheets without killing myself

Axminster do a panel lifter - goes under the board - but made of metal, with a longer arm than the plastic ones. I’ve used it to move 18mm ply pretty easily.
