    Swivel Head Lathe

Decent used Tyme Avon short bed? They done seem to fetch much but they’re a quality machine. I believe if it was really too long for you, or you could only find a long bed example, you could cut the square bars to your preferred length.

    Lasers - advice please

You get what you pay for, and a frustration free machine isn’t going to be a cheap one I’m afraid. About the best of the glass tube machines are the Boxford’s. They’ve done a lot of work on these to make them reliable and bring them up to CE standard, so any other cheap Chinese machine, expect...

    What diameter approximately?

    What are these called?

I learned recently that tinning the wire with solder can lead to loose connections - it ‘cold flows’ over time in the clamped screw terminal due to the pressure. Good job I’m always too lazy to do it

    Possible can of worms

Comments from the ex-pro who taught me - won’t mention his name in case he doesn’t want me to, this was years ago when I considered one: “All woodturning tools need a hollow grind in order for the bevel to rub properly behind the cutting edge. This is what gives the finish. Sorby know this as...

    Staircase treads...

Nice work, thanks for posting the pics. Did the wax change the colour at all? Wife definitely prefers the lighter colour but the oil I used made it darker.

Dust ports- so many different non standard sizes : (

Surprised people regard 3D printers so highly for this particular application. I’ve used them for 15 years professionally and would still only trust a part from a relatively high end model (£10Kish) not to eventually break between layers. I have used them for lots of dust adaptors but really...

    Air Quality Testing

Completely agree. I have P601 but not an expert, but I can make a confident qualitative judgement of pass/fail in about 3 seconds of walking into a saw room and then prove it with the instruments. Any particular reason? I know of other testers claiming to be using them successfully and it...

    Staircase treads...

That’s good to know, I’d assumed it would be permanent. Any pics of the finished result? I think she liked a lighter colour before I put the Liberon floor oil on (not bought specially, just happened to be in the workshop and thought I would slap a bit on). There are a lot of marks and holes...

    Staircase treads...

I was hoping it would sit at about the right level for carpet + underlay which will be on the landing (the one pictured looks about right) and to do something like this but it seems like anywhere selling these kits no longer has them available, so perhaps the regs you mention have come back...

    Air Quality Testing

I’ve got one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224275641236 but can’t seem to get any consistent results out of it.

Weird sculpture thing...suggestions before I burn it

Very kind of you all. I’ve received a generous offer from a member, but I’m curious what it might look like with lights in it, possibly in the style of a James Bond type cryogenic vial storage pod... so I might mess about with it a bit more after all.:giggle:

    Staircase treads...

We’re decorating our hall and staircase and my wife has been on Pinterest...sigh. So I’ve taken the stair carpet up, and the treads are ok quality - it’s a 1950s council house. A proper stair carpet was fitted at some point in the past so it’s been painted at the sides. I stripped this off...

Good call, probably a lot more sellable too. Just needs a suitable camping lantern. I think every 19yo aspiring designer is influenced by that bloke?

Weird sculpture thing...suggestions before I burn it

I don’t know much about him, but doesn’t he like older stuff with some provenance? If you’re serious though, I drive past his place on the way to work.

Weird sculpture thing...suggestions before I burn it

This was a university product design project. The brief was to make a ‘jardiniere’ (fancy plant pot), inspired by my choice of architect. I picked Nick Grimshaw. Its sycamore, purpleheart and aluminium. Finished with Danish oil followed by Briwax. The plant (eg., senecio rowleyanus or...
