Vice lubrication, rust prevention - Spares

That looks like a great resource. Thanks Simon. I need a couple of bits for other bits for another vice too so I should be able to stock up.

Vice lubrication, rust prevention - Spares

Graphite is a good dry lubricant, it doesn't attract dust and dirt like oil or grease does. Not suitable in this situation though I think, as won't help to prevent rusting at all.

Vice lubrication, rust prevention - Spares

Related question. I also have a Record 52 1/2 vice. It's missing the quick release spring though. I think I've read somewhere that these are still available. Anyone know where I can buy one please?

Vice lubrication, rust prevention - Spares

Thanks both. I'll give the lithium grease a try.

Vice lubrication, rust prevention - Spares

I've got a behemoth of a vice, a Record 53. Wondering what oil or grease to use on the guide rods. What do others favour? I acquired it a couple of years ago, stripped it down, cleaned it up and then mounted it on the bench. Can't remember what I used on the guide rods the first time but I've...

    Old brades tool

They also made excellent Bill Hooks and axes. The best, IMHO.

    Pump

I've just finished reading this, a great book. https://www.abebooks.co.uk/products/isbn/9781610350518?cm_sp=rec-_-vhr_1-_-plp&ref_=vhr_1 Amongst loads of other interesting information there's a description of how they used to make hand pumps like this from wood, before the advent of lead and...

    The Face Mask Store?

I'd give them a call to discuss the question. It does seem quite odd. Hopefully they'll have a decent explanation but if not you'll know not to buy it.

    The Face Mask Store?

I bought some disposable masks from them last year, and they were very good. There was some slight issue, they sent the wrong ones or something, can't really remember, but their customer service was excellent. Very fast communication and no quibbling. I'd recommend the company based on my...

    Extolling the virtues of Woodwork

I just heard a short program extolling the virtues of making things with wood, it was quite interesting. Probably not news for most people on here, but it was nice to hear it recognised anyway. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live:bbc_radio_fourfm?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

    That's a waste of a good G&T!

Sowing the First Seeds of 2023

Thanks. I've tried those iron based pellets but they weren't that effective and dissolved in the rain quite quickly. My preferred option is to use copper rings. It's the only alternative to pellets that actually works. I should have put them round the baby cabbage plants this year, not sure...

Sowing the First Seeds of 2023

I'm keen to grow cabbages. I've got a crop this year, raised from seed in Spring, and they're now almost ready to harvest. Sadly they've been ravaged by slugs though. I cut a couple recently and there was nothing left to salvage, such was the damage. Really frustrating as they've been taking up...

    Bowman 135 Saved.

Seriously? That's impressive. My lad has always been very hands on, and I've always encouraged him by letting him use whatever hand tools he can manage. I'm confident that he can already use a file or a hammer more proficiently than a lot of adults! (A sad indictment of the world we live in...

    Bowman 135 Saved.

This is nice, good to see one of these again. A blast from the past. I've got an old Mamod stationary steam engine that I used to play with as an older child, hours of fun. It's stored away up in the loft, seeing this reminds me that it's there. I can't wait to introduce my son to it, but maybe...

    How did we do?

I've used Mortar Cleaner, (hydrochloric acid), in the past for cleaning things up. That's been heavier tools like hammers though, probably a bit too aggressive for more delicate things like planes.

    How did we do?

Thanks. What is this citric acid solution exactly? I've seen it mentioned on here a few times. It's not just lemon juice I assume.

    How did we do?

Yep, I prefer this kind of handle.

    How did we do?

Thanks for the confirmation on the planes anyway guys.
