    Invasion of US Capitol building

That is rude and un-called for. I have not disputed the results of the election, unlike those bringing legal cases.

    Invasion of US Capitol building

That's not quite correct. The Courts did decline to hear some cases, and there was some video evidence and personal testimony. Whether that would have amounted to enough to change the results of State ballots is not known, and probably now never will be. Doesn't matter now, anyway. It always...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

There was some vote fraud, and (I think) fifteen court cases were prepared. The courts, including the Supreme Court, declined to hear fourteen of them, so whatever evidence there may have been wasn't legally tested. That may be either the Courts taking a pragmatic decision not to become...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

Just as a historical note of fact, this isn't the only time the Capitol building has been 'occupied' by protestors in recent years. Back in 2018, protestors opposed to the appointment of Brett Kavanagh to the Supreme Court stormed and shut down the building. FLASHBACK: Anti-Kavanaugh Protesters...

Now that did make I chuckle .... Many a true word, an' all that.

    China

Have you ever worked for the Arts Council, by any chance? (Asking tongue in cheek, just to be clear!) Many moons ago, I read a few copies of Crafts, the periodical issued by The Crafts Council, before it was reabsorbed into the greater Arts Establishment. It was full of drivel like that. Sort...

    Chisel tang repair

The tang end is relatively soft, so it should be possible to dress off the mushrooming, hammer the tang straight (or file it straight) and fit a new handle. Whether that's worth the bother is a matter for the individual. I think I would - there's plenty of useful length left on the business end.

    What happens now?

I was going to write a longish screed, but I think "Your guess is as good as mine, and forecasts are usually wrong" probably summarises it.

You know the world is moving fast when....

Banks were going to junk the use of cheques a couple of years ago. After it was pointed out to them that they were basically denying a service to people without mobile phones or internet access (still a few million people in the UK), they relented. Cheque services became noticably quicker and...

How Necessary is a Specialised Scrub Plane?

Wells and Hooper (Modern Cabinet Work, first published 1908, third edition 1922) give a suggested tool list for a cabinetmaker. It includes a 'Bismarck, or Roughing plane, single iron' (priced at 1/9d by Tyzack and Son, Old Street, E.C. (which is a London address). They also illustrate one on...

Chisel sharpening - do we have a beginner guide?

I think the usual material for oilstone boxes was whatever happened to be available. Cabinetmakers might find a nice piece of mahogany, shopfitters would have access to offcuts all sorts of choice timbers; teak would nice, being oily, but very hard to find these days.. Iroko should be as good as...

    Changing Times

Well, it's been around since 1869, apparently, so that fits most people's idea of antique. Fourth paragraph down ... History and Future of Plastics | Science History Institute

Chisel sharpening - do we have a beginner guide?

The surface of an India fine stone needs refreshing about once a decade if you're using it occasionally, and take care to sharpen over the whole surface of the stone and wipe it clean of contaminated oil at the end of each day. If you're using it professionally every day, maybe once a year. I...

    Bringing goods from the EU

Here you go. All 1,246 pages of it. EU-UK_Trade_and_Cooperation_Agreement_24.12.2020.pdf (order-order.com) No, I'm not going to summarise it. We have a Civil Service for that job. Await their deliberations.

    Bringing goods from the EU

That document was published on 17th December 2020. The UK/EU Free Trade Agreement was not agreed until 23rd December. If I were you, I'd wait until the document was updated to reflect the provisions of the latest agreement before drawing too many firm conclusions. Quite a lot of 'No Deal'...

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

Wrong. Read what was written carefully, Jacob. The regulation imposes an obligation to hold valid insurance - that's all.

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

VERY roughly speaking, standards are voluntary, laws etc are mandatory. You can choose whether or not to buy an engineer's square conforming to BS939. If you're equipping a new manufacturing facility for Rolls Royce, you probably would. If you just want to know whether you've ground the edges...

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

You'll be happy to know that the number of MEPs a country has (or not) does not affect their input to standards. The standards bodies (CEN, BSI and so on) deal with standards, but not regulations, directives or laws. The European Commission and various Parliaments deal with laws, directives and...

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

No change on that one - the UK is still a member of CEN, as you'll see under 'membership' in this link; European Committee for Standardization - Wikipedia By the way, the British Standards Institution is not a part of government, it's an independent organisation. Originally set up in 1901 as...
