    Coronavirus

Listening to one of the evening radio news programmes yesterday evening, an interview with a former senior executive with one of the big supermarkets covered the problems the big food retailers are facing. He said there are no supply shortages, but the sudden increases in demand in stores has...

It seems that decision is on scientific advice, not a political decision. Here's a clip of Sir Patrick Valance, Chief Scientific Officer, explaining his advice to a committee of MPs earlier today. https://order-order.com/2020/03/17/schools-not-shut/

    Coronavirus

Went out for my daily walk this morning. There were lots of people about, including some of the 'regulars'. One lady I see from time to time had a carton of milk with her. Lady, "I'm just off to deliver this to my mum. She locked the doors and won't come out at all." Me, "That's a bit over the...

BOOKS ON HISTORICAL FRAMING/ CARPENTRY IDEAS PLEASE

George Ellis wrote several books for the wood trades, around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. 'Modern Practical Joinery' is fairly well known, has been reprinted by Stobart Davies, and may still be available new. 'Modern Practical Stairbuilding and Handrailing' was also reprinted, also...

No. Rationing would be introduced before it reached that stage. There are no shortages, just selfish people panic buying. Some of the supermarkets are already restricting quantities per customer of some items. It would be divine retribution if the panic buyers contracted obesity-related...

    Coronavirus

Yes - credit to the BBC for broadcasting the statement in full and (more or less) uninterrupted, so we know what those responsible said, and not some hack's second hand interpretation. Does anybody know where the 'herd immunity' thing came from? Was it direct reporting of an official press...

    Fixing a marking gauge

Yes - holding very small parts (metal or wood) to work on them is always tricky - unless you're a watchmaker and equipped for it! I held mine right at the corner of the jaws of a small metalworking vice, on a slope (as it were) with the point end proud of the jaws in such a way that I could...

    Coronavirus

This is an article about the media, and media commentary, by someone who (briefly) worked in that field. It's quite sobering - and not at all complimentary. The old maxim of "never believe everything you read in the papers" could perhaps now be rehashed to say, "You're a damned fool if you...

    Fixing a marking gauge

Masonry nails make good gauge pins, too. They're fileable (just about), and work well with a sort of rounded-end knife shape to the tip. If all you can find are galvanised ones, the zinc can be taken off by soaking in half a cupful of vinegar for a day or two. A small packet from a DIY shed...

    Coronavirus

Listening to the news a few minutes ago, it seems that supermarkets have seen crowds gathering before opening times, and long queues at checkouts. I did my usual weekly shop yesterday morning, and it was busier than usual, with gaps on shelves. Just like to say that I consider this panic buying...

    EBay slippery selling

Ebay, for all it's perceived faults, has been an absolute boon to home woodworkers (and many others). Back in the 'good old days' before the internet was a thing, if you wanted good second hand or vintage tools you had far fewer options. You could attend auctions (occasional specialist, or...

    EBay slippery selling

If the photos show that parts are missing, where's the dishonesty? It's up to the buyer to look at the photos, not the seller to separately list all faults. The seller has - honestly - shown what's there in the photos.

Any reports of the panic buying of sauerkraut and bratwurst yet?

    Coronavirus

I wonder whether there's a regional element to the panic buying? Bog rolls and flour everywhere, it seems, but other essentials specific to certain places. For example, quinoa and truffle oil in Islington, pies in Wigan, Mars Bars and lard in Glasgow, that sort of thing. Might ask my old mum...
