need a small gas welding set, recommendations sought

You can get rent free bottles of oxygen and acetylene these days, so you don't have to go with BOC etc. Refundable deposit. Around £200 for deposit p!us gas for both gases, plus of course cost of torch, nozzles, pipes and flashback arrestors. These often come up on fleabay, but new flashback...

Angle grinder stand to make radial arm (horizontal) cuts

Hi Hitch, From what I understand the nut allows the disk to slip so the grinder doesn't try to twist your arm off. I'm pleased to say I haven't tried it because I haven't had a blade jam, but I thoughf it would be a good safety device. I don't use them on 4" grinders. K

    Steel from old rotavator blades?

I'm tempted to try anyway, even if it does end up a waste of time. At least I will find out, and I can pass on the result via the forum. I'm also wondering whether heat treatment might be of benefit. K

Spring water - domestic treatment plants

That's where a storage tank comes in handy. Ours stores about a cubic metre of water. Of course if your spring runs dry then so will the tank in a few days, but you can fit a float valve to cut the power to the pump so it won't run dry and get damaged. K

    Clarke CWL12D - options....

At least you will find out if you enjoy woodturning, and if so you could invest in a good quality lathe later on. Although your lathe is a 'cheapie', don't be tempted to buy cheap turning tools. Get some decent ones (Ashley Isles, Sorby, Crown etc). If you don't take to turning then these will...

    Steel from old rotavator blades?

Hi all, Always on the lookout for cheap / free turning tools, so does anyone know if the steel used in rotavator blades would be any good for use as scraping tools? I have some worn blades from a tractor mounted rotavator which I could grind to suitable shapes and fix to a mild steel shank, but...

Getting an old 3 phase lathe running again

Hi Martinr, It certainly sounds like your motor is not dual voltage. You have a few options. You could buy a three phase CONverter which will give you 3 phase but not variable speed. There are two types, static or rotary. Static are cheaper but do not give such a good approximation to true 3...

Getting an old 3 phase lathe running again

I agree with the three phase option, but the motor must be dual voltage to enable it to be connected in delta mode, else it must be changed. You are right in saying there is not much room, but I suspect a three phase motor will be more compact than a single phase motor of equal power. A single...

Spring water - domestic treatment plants

Hi Whiskywil, You probably know far more than I do about all this, I'm repeating what the installers said (and perhaps not repeating it with full accuracy). However after installing the system we were still getting the tell-tale blue staining in the bath although not as bad as with the spring...

Spring water - domestic treatment plants

We had a bore hole dug about 10 years ago. It is 50m deep and at that depth there is likely to be excessive amounts of group 4 metals(?) especially iron and manganese. The installer fitted a Crystalrite system to remove these impurities, followed by a filter and then a U V tube. We later fitted...

    Asbestos

Asbestos cement sheet is certainly less dangerous than asbestos insulation but I wold still be very careful if you are tempted to do this work yourself (assuming you can't get the bulders to sort it out). Personal protection is essential. K

    Variable speed

Hi Richard, Congrats on getting a Viceroy. I bought one about a year ago and I think it is a superb machine, rock solid. It was 3 phase already, but the motor was not dual voltage so I had to replace it. It was quite a job but possible. Basically I raised the headstock end using a block and...

    Flight advice

Regarding the baggage weight limit, I was returning from holiday and my case was weighed. I was told it was overweight and I would he surcharged. I opened the case, removed a pair if sandals which I stuffed in my coat pockets, and all was well. It was a budget airline, if that makes any...

Looks like I will have to leave this forum

Our next door neighbour was caught some years ago, responding to a problem with her veendows. Then of course her computer wouldn't start up, and the scammer wanted £250 to fix it. Instead she took the computer to the local IT shop and they sorted it for about £15. I'm sure people are still...

Looks like I will have to leave this forum

Reason - well I had a telephone call from a 'non-English' gentleman a few days ago. He told me he was from British Telecom and that my internet connection would be disconnected in a few days, for several months at least. The reason for this is that my security had been compromised and my...

Visited the Axminster shop for the first time...

I paid my first ever visit to an Axminstsr store last Saturday while staying with relatives in Cardiff. Really enjoyed the experience. I had a chat with a woodturner who was demonstrating segmented turning. Also had an interesting chat with two Axminster employees, one a very helpful young lady...

    Covering old roof

You can do a fairly permanent job with steel box profile sheets. They come ready painted or ready plastic coated (bit dearer) but that would solve the issue of felt once and for all. I would keep the existing boarded roof, minus the felt, to cut down condensation from the steel. As has been...
