Paraffin (kerosene) is thinner than diesel. It is the same as central heating oil, currently costs around 60p per litre when bought in bulk (min 500 litres). Cheap enough but it stinks. I wonder if it would work to thin down hydraulic oil, and might not smell so much then.

It is a difficult decision - is it better to keep the lathe and spend out on accessories, or to cut losses and get a better lathe? Perhaps the compromise would be to keep the lathe (for now, until the limitations become too much to tolerate) but buy accessories that can be used on a replacement...

Well you may be right regarding peripheral speed, but there is still a maximum speed indicated on 9" disks which would be exceeded by putting on a 5" grinder. Hi all, just a thumbs up - Yandles have 150mm Mirka abrasives on offer. 240 grit basecoat and 800 grit gold at 100 disks for £10. These are normally about £8 for 10 disks. No other grit sizes on offer. K
