I know nothing about planes - help!! Where do I start?

I have avoided planes as there seems a plethora of types: block, rebate etc available. I need my woodwork to move on a level, and to avoid me relying on sanding, where do I start? I was looking at LN kit but I don't know what I need. I mainly make mirrors - elm, walnut, maple etc and some...

    Wood shows on SKY

Where have all of the woodie shows gone from SKY? There used to be Cutting Edge Woodworker, Great British Woodshop, John's Workshop etc and not forgetting Norm. I haven't seen any for ages except that buffoon that does the Salvager - the least talented of all of them.

I've used Liberon finishing oil on an elm chopping board I made - I can't seem to see if it's food safe. Anyone?

Thanks - but I've got a £50 voucher for Axminster which is why I was going there. I was worried about the weight and that it might be a bit heavy for regular useem

HC 260 M Planer thicknesser - help with new part

Whilst my workshop was effectively mothballed since 2005, my machinery was in a double garage and suffered the effects of damp. My HC 260M Elektra Beckum P/T has been hit hardest and the cylindrical part - the whole drum - where the blade sits has rusted badly. Any experience whether it's an...

    New workshop

With the imminent-ish arrival of a little Hall (February), my plans for a large workshop build have had to go on hold. Luckily, I have finally talked Mrs H into letting me take over the guest annexe which has a small kitchen area and sink, and a small bathroom/wc and shower. The building...

How do you find a craftsman - built in oak bookcase needed.

We have an alcove to the side of a chimney breast in the living room which would be nice with shelves and then oak glazed doors in front - a built in bookcase. A flick through the yellow pages shows a host of carpenters and joiners, but it's difficult to know if they are proper craftsman...

    Finding wood

I know what you mean about a lack of local suppliers - I'm in Ramsey - I've been to Lincolnshire woodcraft a couple of times but they only seemed to have smaller quantities for turning - no planks etc. Fenland Timber at Whittlesey can order oak in for you - otherwise they're a softwood...

New England chair - adirondack - plans anyone?

Thanks - everyone - limited wifi access out here so online when I can and Mrs H allows (not often). Hadn't planned on on being online but bought a MacBook in NY - on the basis that I could upload all of the holiday photos from the digital camera in case 'anything should happen to the camera'...

New England chair - adirondack - plans anyone?

I'm holidaying in New England at the moment - Mrs H is getting ready before we go out for dinner so I'm having a sneaky five minutes on the site. I've seen these chairs all over Vermont and New Hampshire - I think they're called ADIRONDACK chairs - does anyone have any plans because I want to...

New workshop authorised by Mrs H - help with costings.

Have made the mistake of calling it a workshop already albeit I have explained it is a hobby one for domestic use only. I did consider the two buildings idea. Building regs have now said I can submit a BUILDING CONTROL NOTICE but that they will probably want to see ENGINEER'S plans of both...
