    Stairs refurb part 2

Yes there is small story to that, a few years back before the main stair replacement was on the cards I was due for hip replacement at 58 so needed extra support hence fitting that rail, now it's come back to haunt me I know it doesn't quite gel and considered removing it but not getting any...

    Stairs refurb part 2

Thanks Bingy yes I am pleased, stressful though as I always think I'm not good enough to get the result I want. I don't think I could do this work for others though I'd never make any money, so I content myself with having saved some. I remeber my dad building a house and getting a carpenter in...

    It is so annoying.

Ha, You're not alone, living in Norfolk allegedly in the UK, as far as machinery goes both woodworking and engineeriing there is a dearth of stuff available and if something does come up you would think it made of gold not the tat that it appears to be. Everything useful seems to be midlands or...

    Plane fettling

Surely poking a 1.5 thou feeler gauge around the edge of a plane on a reference surface (assuming it does not slide under), still doesn't tell you it's flat only that the perimeter of the sole is consistent with itself, could be a gaping void in the middle . Only a proper bluing will confirm flat.

    Late in life career shift

I echo @Fitzroy's sentiments. You have to identify what is really unsettling you. I have spent 47 years in the same company spending the first 30 quite happy working with my hands installing equipment from electro mechanical hrough to pseudo electronic reed relay switching and then processor...

    Stairs refurb build notes

So some of the bits I learned. First time using PU glue in a tube. Brilliant for quick fix but need to keep pressure on whilst setting. Good gap filling when setting new newel posts. getting mitres on the cladding to meet all in one go I never saw as an option especially as I had to pack out a...

    Stairs refurbishment

So the wife said can you do the stairs the old mahogany late 80's is looking a bit jaded and we had themed on oak doors in the redecoration so clashed a bit. I wasn't looking forward to it as she wanted unfussy. I have done one before with turned oak components and painted the donor base newels...

    Grab Handles in Shower

At a push can you get to the studs from the other side of the wall? I would consider taking the plasterboard off that side and put whatever noggins are needed for the rails and make good.. Anything to do with air suction will fail and that's the last thing you want on your conscience if she...

Dunelm - Tell them what they want to hear

I had the same thing with an Amazon review about safety gloves advertised as large, when they arrived they were size 8 which are not large. Pointed it out in a review in a factual way and Amazon bounced it for more or less the same spiel you got.

    A trusted source: hammer handles?

My Dad used to say don't choke the hammer, as I grew up I held it further up the handle, but when doing light tapping find myself choking it again. I guess it's automatic adjusment of the lever moment required. When I nod my head you hit it.

festool mitre saw buy stand or not?

I usually buy from FFX as price is good if you get discounts etc but bought my latest Festool (Kapex60) from Powertoolmate, was a bit suspicious as never heard of them before but price was much better service was good.

Running cables behind dot and dab plasterboard?

Gyproc EasiFill 60 you don't need to be a plasterer with this stuff. Fill the groove, let dry and sand back to get perfect smooth surface, if needed apply a bit more.

    RDG Tools and Vevor Tools

RDG tools is UK based and been around a long time. The other is from the look of it non UK and doesn't provide any business address. Always gets me twitchy these sites, I would wait until someone confirms successful purchase. I have ordered from Aliexpress and never had an issue (politics aside).

Water sitting in centre of shower tray

There is lots of argument about laying shower trays on sand cement mix. Personally I think it's crazy even though manufacturers insist on it (most/some). Sand cement will stop giving at a certain compression point and because the area is so large it's hard to gaurentee it' will go down level and...
