Hand Plane setup, sharpening & how to plane properly - in person course

I use an Axminster straight edge. A 1 meter steel one, which they used to do. Now they only seem to do aluminum ones. Certified steel straight edges (like Starrett) are not cheap, and aren't needed. To see what that sort of thing costs RS PRO 1m Steel Metric Straight Edge | RS Components . But...

Withdrawn No 4 and 5 1/2 Record Planes.

Having complained about carriers generically a few posts ago, my heart goes out to delivery drivers. Those with tracking say "driver is currently at delivery 42. Your delivery is number 112 out of 187". And then you realise why they dump stuff on the doorstep, ring the bell (or not) and then...

Withdrawn No 4 and 5 1/2 Record Planes.

I've had problems with most carriers over the years. My latest horror story is Hermes International's inability to deliver a package of presents and cards to our daughter in Australia for Christmas and her birthday (a few days difference between the two). It is currently on its way back. And no...

    Repairs to butcher's block

As others have said, using a long grain frame to enclose an end grain block is a recipe for gapping. Once water ingresses the end grain fibres absolutely noting will stop it swelling. I would have gone for glued joints between the long grain faces of end grain boards. Perhaps with biscuits. Once...

    Wood punch branding tool

I bought a complete set of letters and numbers, 6mm high, from Rutland. I think they had it on offer at the time, but looks like £30 now. Comes in a nice wooden box.

    Odd joints?

The joint between the verticals and feet of my Klausz bench are fox wedged. Just for the hell of it. The top joint is just through wedged. 2009.

Noob tipsfor Laser Cutter / CNC for woodworking?

I agree entirely. The difficulty in making an Amazon-special eye (and hand, and fire) safe is non-trivial and costly. Last stuff I had done (acrylic machining) I had done at a commercial outfit. Mechanical methods, although hazardous as any machine tool is, are a whole lot more preferable

Noob tipsfor Laser Cutter / CNC for woodworking?

Indeed - commercial laser machining stations operate in an interlocked enclosure with fume extraction. A quick check on Amazon finds a 15W laser for £148. That is 450nm wavelength in the deep blue. It comes with a pair of safety specs - but with no face seals, and are essentially useless. They...

Noob tipsfor Laser Cutter / CNC for woodworking?

One of the things that no-one mentions with lasers in the material cutting class are exceptionally dangerous to eyesight. A 7W laser is a Class 4 device, and will not only drill a hole in your retina by direct exposure, even scattered light from the workpiece is hazardous. The maximum eye safe...

What to use to fill large gap around extractor vent pipe?

A vent louvre is essential. Without, a short period away from home at the right time of year will end up with birds nests in there. Apart from the fact they make a hell of a mess (experience!), you wont be able to use your extractor until they fledge. But in general +4!

Alternative wood for plane totes / saw handles

I've been thinking about this, because I have a very useful Stanley 51/2 with a broken handle. But I have some hornbeam, that I used to make the bench dogs for my bench. Strikes me that it would be an excellent choice to resurrect the old Stanley. Not as beautiful as some of the other woods...

    Which used bandsaw £300 - £400

I have a Cropico something or other. Built like a battleship. Cost me a couple of hundred maybe ten years ago. Repainted it, added a Kreg fence, new bearings and it is a source of joy.

    New Titebond glue

I've just used is for a chopping board. With four, 70mm thick edge jointed boards, even Extend grips surprisingly quickly, With Regular I would have stood no chance.

Alternative wood for plane totes / saw handles

That is a good shout. Although MAC seems a long way from Oxfordshire, our son lives in Peterborough. Next time we're over visiting, we're definitely going to visit them! Love the planes by the way - stunning bit of work.

What type of glue for a workbench?

It isn't about the glue - it is about the joint. The two long quarter sawn beech boards I joined on my Klausz bench were tongue and groove. Well actually I routed two wide and deep channels and glued in a length of plywood in one board, and cramped it in. Then glued the channel and cheek on the...

    Chopping board finish advice

Oak isn't ideal because of the tannin. Now it depends on what sort of knives you use, but if you use anything fancy (like Damascus) tannin can cause rusting of the edge. The better alternative is beech. But since the op has a chunk of oak, with regular stainless knives it is just fine.

    Pocket Hole Jigs?

No one has mentioned biscuits. Now I have the Kreg pocket hole jig, and a filled pocket is just fine under veneer. But biscuits are another joint alternative to dowels or pocket hole. The late and very great James Krenov used dowels in most of his stunning and very characteristic cabinets. But...

Sliding mitre saw - big or small?

This is not really an answer to your question, but I have a Wadkin BRA350 radial arm saw. The old, round arm one. Three phase, with a single/3ph converter. I use negative rake blades, which means that it does not try to climb out of the cut. Now that cost me £200 (eBay). Then about the same for...
