PLEASE POST YOUR SUMMER WOODTURNING CHALLENGE ENTRY HERE

Have finally got around to entering the competition. This is a simple yew bowl where I tried to leave the timber to speak for itself. The log was brought around to me by my mate's lad, and I used the chainsaw and band saw to get a blank on the lathe, I rough turned it last autumn and finished...

    New extractor port

Thanks Mark, I'll look into that and sorry Chris, I did try to upload a pic but couldn't workout how to resize them on my phone...

    New extractor port

Hi I've got a problem. Having lent out my old (reserve) Axminster drum extractor it came back with the port smashed, I've tried looking for a replacement, Axminster can't supply and I can't see anything online to fit the bill. Looks like I'm going to have to make one, it's for a 63mm hose, has...

    Some more coffee mugs

They look great, I want one! - what have you finished them with?

Something a bit different in yew

That's beautiful, I like it the way it is too, I've tried knocking the corners off smaller pieces like this and ended up ruining them but that's more my lack of confidence, skill and not knowing when to stop...

    Bandsaw buying advice

If second hand an option the Dewalt 738 / 739 is worth a look. I have the 738, 150mm depth of cut and 300mm throat is quite a decent capacity for a compact machine.

Shelving alcoves - narrower at front?

Thanks Woodbrains, You've got my dilemma - unfortunately the taper is pretty much all to one side. I've put thicker battening on and managed to reduce the shelves to fit and wedge them. Will now glue a thin strip full width and caulk the sides as suggested... Busy builder - I had already used...

Shelving alcoves - narrower at front?

Hi Steve, Thanks, yes thats 'plan B' - might have to go that way...

Shelving alcoves - narrower at front?

Hi Mike, Yes - unfortunately the supports (10mm battens) are already on the wall and the design was to leave a groove on the edge of the boxes so they slide on and hide the supports. School boy error I know but the ones on the left look great without visible battens/supports so have to try to...

Shelving alcoves - narrower at front?

Hi just a quick one to see if anyone has experience of my current problem. I'm shelving two alcoves and planned torsion boxes made from 9mm ply to fit each. The ones on the left fit fine unfortunately I have now noticed that the right hand alcove is narrower at the front (by about 25mm) than...

Hot glue gun for glue chucks

I have a cheap, mains operated Draper one that has worked well for years. They are pretty simple. Like the idea of making a new stand though because it does keep falling over...

    wax sealing for turning blanks

Hi Bob, YEs I think this is the way forward, I recently bought 5kg from a local craft shop (£20.99) and used an old stock pot and a camping stove to start sealing and as you say it makes large batches lots quicker and cleaner to deal with. One tip I picked up from another thread was to melt...

    Yew Bonanza

Hi Woodfarmer, As for the 3x3 pieces, I usually go for goblets, candlesticks or boxes but may try some fruit and a hollow form though haven't done so yet. I have used lots of small pieces of yew for christmas baubles (quite traditional shapes) where the figure and fine finish really stand out...

    Yew Bonanza

Indeed, not sure when I'll start on this lot though, the chap said it had been felled around twelve years ago but it was in the open, only the first few inches showed any appreciable moisture but I think I'll stockpile most of it until the autumn - any thoughts on how seasoned this would be? the...

    Workshop build epic

A workshop with a brewery beneath - not sure if its genius or madness but I'd like to find out... A very impressive build and what a lovely spot too, enjoy the fruits of your labours :)

    Yew Bonanza

Thanks for the offer Graham but I fear it might be a bit too far for you travel, 'tis a shame though cos' there's enough offcuts for hundreds of pens, christmas decorations, light pulls, coin dishes etc. etc.

    Yew Bonanza

Like a lot of folk I don't get enough time to work with wood so today was the perfect storm, a day off work, the wife away and I have 'permission' to visit the sawmill as long as I bring back something to make the bench I've been promising. After picking out an ash board I asked if they had any...

Is there any logic to courier services?

My favourite recently was UPS who (twice!?) photographed my front door to prove they had turned up but failed to put a card through to contact them - by the time I did (five days after ordering) they had sent my items back to the vendor...

Segmented mug with W.I.P and questions

That's fine looking piece - have to ask, where did you source the mug liner from? Great project and excellent segmenting! :)
