Nice one devonwoody, that brings back memories of when i was into model railways, sadly all gone now. I remember well making those superquick card shop fronts and engine shed. Let's be Honest -can you even make money from woodworking?

Sorry jacob i will disagree with your bespoke comments as i would consider most of my furniture work to be bespoke. Say for example a customer rings up " can you make an Oak dresser to fit between our TV and a window " so i call around and measure up they choose 3 draws, 3 doors with open...

Let's be Honest -can you even make money from woodworking?

As i've been making a living from furniture making/woodwork for the last 26 years i so had to get involved. If i had a mortgage to pay then, now way, i know 2 local furniture makers and a joinery who have wives with good jobs and they all say that without that income they cold not keep going. It...

Multifuel Stove not heating house. And some other stuff.

The only way to test the moisture of a log is to split it and measure the centre. Yours maybe 15% on the outside but could be 50% in the middle. Any woodburner works best when running hard, but if the logs are still wet then all the heat is gone in drying off all the moisture. You need to get...

    painting melamine faced kitchen doors

Thanks for the replies chaps. I feel it will be ok now to put in a price for the job. Although from what slow steve has said, with all that prep it looks like the price will be a lot higher. Flynnwood i always use Zinssers for all my priming work, the water based one, always 2 coats, good stuff.

    painting melamine faced kitchen doors

I been asked to quote to paint kitchen doors for a customer. The doors are of a 70's style textured melamine faced with an oak trim with a finger pull moulded into it. I've done it many times on solid oak but never on this type. Anyone done it and did it last ? i did not want to take it on if...

A visit from some would be thieves.

I can't understand people keeping their workshops safe with a padlock only which can be cut through in minutes ! On my doors i have deadlocks top and bottom plus a mortice lock in the middle. The 2 mating doors have metal strips fixed to them screwed in place with security screws to stop a...

I am (I think) a rather jammy git!

I recently cleared out a 90 year old furniture makers wood store as he is on his deathbed. It was stored in a transit luton body and packed to the roof. Their was every species you could think about, turning blanks and reclaimed timbers. I kept the wide apple, elm and beech boards and the...

I have a Startrite 401S bandsaw that i purchased from Yandles in 2003 at a cost of just over £1,200. I needed a large single phase bandsaw at the time for ripping down some oak beams for a house build. The problem i had is that the blades would break after about a couple of months of use. I...
