What are home alarms for, other than driving your neighbours up the wall?

Thing is in every thread on every forum about home security someone's got a reason against every potential precaution. Alarm - they'll be in and out before anyone cares CCTV - they'll just wear hoodies PIR lights - that just gives them better light to work by Dog - they'll kill or drug them...

What are home alarms for, other than driving your neighbours up the wall?

That'd disable mine for all of fifteen seconds, assuming they didn't fight over it and then mug you for more. Security is more about layers than any one thing. We have CCTV and radar with on and off site recording and analytics as the soft outer layer. PIRs and security lights next, then...

What are home alarms for, other than driving your neighbours up the wall?

I believe expanding foam may be more effective (if less satisfying) than the lump hammer.

    New music

    47. When I was a lot younger it was noisy indie, goth, and shoegaze. I got into heavier as I got older, though The God Machine was my gateway drug... I do still like music without shouting in it!

    Language, phonetics, pronunciation and etymology.

I think we should instead adopt accents to indicate when letters have an unusual pronunciation, and to make typing much harder and more ĉòmpĻļĩċäŧèđ. Especially if we use each accent differently from other accented languages.

It's 99% of pedants that give the rest a bad name.

Though with no chance whatsoever of success.

    New music

I like a bit of nearly-prog - if you've not heard them the The Ocean are worth a go, as are Oceansize (no relation), and maybe Kardashev (though they have some very cookie-monster moments).

Advice needed for installing tv in the workshop

I have two monitors in the workshop and they've been trooping along fine for years; it's worth vacuuming the vents every now and then if you don't have good dust control.

    New music

Baldkev asked for new music, so that's what I suggested (though Hopesfall have been going over 20 years). Would it have been more appropriate to suggest Led Zep and Black Sabbath? To me, "new music" suggests recentlyish released. It might also mean "new to me", of course, but complaining that I...

    Keto diet

Good luck! I did count the first time, the second time I knew what came to what.

    New music

I included examples of most in the next-but-one post. What's confusing you?

    New music

I'm pretty sure it's easier than ever before, with YouTube, Spotify (etc), LastFM, Bandcamp and more.

    New music

I think rap is like most genres - lots of dross, but some gems. I'll offer some assorted electro. Be aware that some of it (especially towards the end) is very, very cheesy.

    New music

I'm not so up to date there, but I do like a bit of POS and Astronautalis.

    New music

Baldkev mentioned metal. I offered - as per the request - some newish bands in that genre. I did forget links though - sorry. Here you go, no particular order.

    New music

On the metal/post hardcore front, Hopesfall, Rosetta, Kardashev, DVNE, Palm Reader. Oh, and Lantlos, and City of Ships.

I started work on a loom bench for my best beloved. Thus far I've designed it, bought rough sawn Ash (to match the loom), planed and thicknessed it, and rough cut the four legs. I haven't yet worked out how to actually build the thing, but a start is a start.

Is there actually a mechanism for ring fencing in UK monetary policy?

    Keto diet

I think like most diets it'll work for some and not for others. I think reducing processed carb intake is probably a decent start for anyone wanting to lose weight; I think some people (including me) struggle a bit with really low carb diets. It's all too easy then for a columnist in need of a...
