    Harrogate show tomorrow

I was going until SWMBO declared that an unrelated 5yr olds birthday party trumped my tool habit :-(

    Paul Sellers - Trademark?

If you compare him to some other youtube woodworkers (mainly American) they definitely go quicker and with more energy about things. His content is good though if you can stick with it.

    Leg Vice Screw fitting ideas.

I don't think there is much truly new in woodworking! Although the Hovarter vises might be an exception (if you haven't seen them before I apologise in advance for the impact on your budget) :-)

    Leg Vice Screw fitting ideas.

I would be interested to know price wise how it matches up to the likes of Benchcrafted. Richard Maguire used to (maybe still does) sell a similar guide which is a steel shaft on a linear bearing. I recall reading that it had to be installed at a degree or two off horizontal and would bind as...

Portable table saw advise DEWALT BOSCH MAKITA

Can I ask why these saws? When someone suggested a track saw instead you seemed to imply that taking it outside to cut an 8x4 wouldn't actually happen. And if you recently sold a TS200 you might be disappointed with any of your options in terms of accuracy and certainly in terms of noise and feel.

    DIY carving axe

Just read the Neeman link - very interesting to anyone who likes to make tools. Decent video from them as well - part of a series https://youtu.be/paCyA9ypEOE

    DIY carving axe

Good job, got a similar head lying around as might give one a go.

Tips - Where to start for the new woodworker

I would say learn to sharpen, get some basic hand tools and have a go. Even if you want to go heavy on the machinery long-term, having a core set of hand skills will serve you well and make sure you don't rely on the machines too much. Oh...and dont forget finishing. It's an often overlooked...

    Recommended stains?

SWMBO has decided that the boys bed needs to be stained to match some new furniture she bought at the weekend! So I need recommendations on what to use! Having never stained anything before I'm at a loss. I know I'll need to take it back to bare wood (presumably?) but then which brand is...

Book Review: The Essential Woodworker by Robert Wearing

Just picked up the book off the back of this thread and I have to say it's great. Wish I had it a couple of years ago, would have saved a lot of bother! I think the time pressures of doing this a hobby come from only getting short sessions in the workshop - an hour here and there - and the...

    Flooring a garage

To be honest it's more the dust that annoys me although I generally do wear Crocs in the shop anyway although I've never thought about why!

    Flooring a garage

Good to know. It really is the cheap option given its almost free. What is yours sitting on? Did you put a DPC down?

    Flooring a garage

That sounds expensive! Perhaps I just need to paint the floor and get some rubber mats in front of the bench!

    Flooring a garage

I'm sick of my dusty concrete floor in the garage and looking for something better. Ideally it needs to be comfortable to stand on, clean and easy to sweep and ideally cheap as well! I've been offered laminate flooring for beer money but don't know if I can just lay it down or if it would need...

    Stolen gear

I keep my garage locked, have an inner locked door and normally park the van tight to the door but then wonder if I'm just flagging the presence of expensive tools and bikes by doing it.

Lidl - gents are advised to excercise caution and restraint.

I needed baked goods this morning and went out of my way to not go into Lidl for fear of spending this month's tool budget on things I really don't need (as opposed to buying what I need but deciding I need the Veritas version and overspending anyway!)

    Workbench plans?

Nooo... I had just settled on a bench design before I read that :( For the op, do you really know what you need or want in your bench? I thought I did then I read the first few chapters of the Schwarz book. I've still not read it all but even the first few is worth reading (and you'll sell the...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Very nicely done. I might need to add a shavehorse to my long list of projects! I've actually got a few axe heads lying around waiting for the day I get around to handling them.

    Spokeshaves

I hadn't noticed them before. They look very nice indeed for that price. Might have to give one a go.

    Spokeshaves

Interesting read that one. I know the cheaper shaves are not up to scratch out of the box but did think they must be capable with some time put in. After all they are just very small planes! Trouble is I don't know how they are meant to work so I wouldn't know if it's my technique or the tool...
