    Wanted Decent quality splitting axes

Sorry, must stop responsing using a phone. Or maybe at all. Here is the emptiness that should have been where the errant 'i' is:

    Wanted Decent quality splitting axes

If you are going seriously woodburning, or just like a good read, I suggest a copy of Norweigian Wood by Lars Mytting. Sections on axes, chopping blocks, stacking including some wonderful designs. Just the sort of book to read on a cold winter day as you sit in front of your wood stove.

    Whats wrong with this wood?

Nice piece, sort of G Plan but not quite, maybe made by Nathan or similar. If you search online for "mid Century sideboards" and select images you will get dozens of pictures. Might help with leg ideas. A search for mid century furniture restoration will also yield results, some sensible...

Holding the lids of boxes for working

Above sounds sensible and looks like the only way to do exactly what you want. Getting it properly centred on the block might be a challenge, I'd most likely mess that up. How about at "B" you drill say 10mm hole part way in, part off. glue in a dowel of contrasting wood, dowel long enough to...

    And now the fun begins!

Good diagram. I think, from memory, it being too dark and cold to visit shed right now, that the SC3 standard jaw instructions say to use a plain sided tenon not a dovetail. Chucks and jaws vary. The jaws are designed to grip straight sides. For a recessed grip you do cut a dovetail. Best...

    Drill Stand Advice Please

A pretty basic question, does your drill have a trigger lock? Both my old corded drills do - a 35 year old bosch and an even older wolf - but no battery drill I have owned has one. I suspect that's why drill stands are rare now. You need a way to hold the trigger in or grow an extra hand and...

Have you had your booster *** ?

Much better to get too many reminders than too few 🙂 I think there is clinical evidence that having a different booster from the original two boosts resistance. It's been jabbing week for me. Monday flu, left arm, Boots. Wednesday pneumonia right arm at GP, you get one, not an annual one...

    Yandles appreciation post 😁

I can see your point, but you called and spoke to real person who sorted it out for you. Compared with companies that don't have a phone number for the store and offer Web chat with people who can't see any more than you can on their system or press 3 to be ignored phone call centres with...

    Banjo cam won't tighten

RP DL305 similar bed. I reckoned that when you moved the banjo along the big "washer" under the slot didn't quite keep up so when you tightened it it was a degree or few off level. Seems tight, get a bit of sideways pressure or vibration and it loosened. Answer was always make sure cam is...

    Wireless radiator valves.

I think its useful to decide of you want your radiator controllers to be able to turn the whole system and/or bits of it on and off, or just turn a radiator or two off at set times. You can achieve that last bit for a lot less money. The next bit of explanation is basic - no need to read it if...

    Zero cost temporary bandsaw outfeed

That's nice - took more than 120 seconds though :) I might do similar if it gets to be a regular job. I agree on ersatz workmates - my grinder sits on one (bolted to MDF, which has a 3x4 chunk of wood underneath longditudinally so it gets clamped between the jaws). Before I had a bandsaw my...

    Banjo cam won't tighten

I had a similar issue with my Record DM305 - similar bed. As above, good clean including under the bed where the cam lock washer slides. Rub of beeswax stick on the bed so it all moves nicely. Counter-intuitive I know but a wipe over of the cam and the bits of casting it contacts with light...

    Lathe cleanup advice

Haven't done the comparison, might depend on stock availability and carriage. I got an Axminster Bandsaw earlier this year. It had a problem with blade guide alignment and customer service was superb, sent me a new part no argument or delay. Sways me towards them. Record might be fine of...

    Zero cost temporary bandsaw outfeed

This seemed to fit the tips and shopmade tools heading. I have a small bandsaw mainly used for bowl blanks and occasional bandsaw boxes. Yesterday I wanted to resaw some long but light sections recovered from 2 old door frames. How to support the far end? This being a one off job I set a...

    Wireless radiator valves.

I'm not anti technology, but my immediate thought is that if someone who is in a house needs to text someone who is not in the house to adjust the heating settings, it's all got a bit too complicated. The range of responses so far reflects the range of lifestyles, remote trvs will be useful to...

    Wireless radiator valves.

I thought very carefuilly about this earlier this year when I replaced my 35 year old oil boiler, tank, valves etc. Too much work and cost to go to ASHP, house a bit old for modern standards. I ended up with conventional TRVs, timer and one room thermostat. Remote TRVs would have added over...

Pest proofing my garage / workshop

These work well, and a side effect is they stop the wind whistling under in cold weather. Makes it a nicer place to work. Not sure it will be wholly mouse proof though but might deter a few. I get them this time of year, likely field mice seeking shelter after harvest. Have you tried keep...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

Just watched the first episode on catch up, no mention of the cost of a seemingly unlimited amount of hardwood. Easy to do adventurous designs (well, clearly not easy for some of them) if you don't have to think about the £££. I missed a bit at the beginning, did they have free choice of what...

    Slow, slow, very slow :)

I'm pretty sure the balls predated discos. Mecca ballrooms c. early 1950s? Must have been called mirror balls or something.

When I was young enough for disco balls, discos hadn't been invented :)
