How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

People keep popping up on here saying that their local hospitals are ghost towns, yet every night on the news I see exhausted hospital workers and hospitals full of very sick people. The only personal anecdote I have is from one of my daughter's friends, a theatre nurse of some 15 years or so...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

The last time I bought a car, its suitability for killing people wasn't one of the criteria on my list of desirable features. I'm fairly sure that it isn't a feature when cars are in the design process either.

    Invasion of US Capitol building

This is the woman who couldn't see the irony in wearing a mask in congress with 'censored' written on it. Standing up and speaking on TV in front of millions of watchers.

What is your favorite American TV show?

Can't wait for the next season of 'Better Call Saul', the best American show since 'Breaking Bad'. 'Mad Men' has to get a mention too...

How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

Credible voices in the wilderness have been warning governments for decades that a pandemic of some sort was inevitable ultimately. And here we are. It is one of a government's jobs to prepare for eventualities like these.

    Invasion of US Capitol building

I would put more credence in the latter. There are massive, and very sophisticated operations, with huge buildings full of people, in Russia (and China, Iran and a dozen other places) logged into social media 24x7 peddling fake news in the form of conspiracy theories. Their purpose is to...

How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

I was going to say that the situation is unprecedented and we should give the government some slack, but on the other hand there have been credible warnings for many years that some kind of pandemic was inevitable eventually, so there should have been some kind of contingency planning. Talk...

    China

Nothing new there. In 1970, in the gents at the Students Union at the University of Surrey, some bright spark had scrawled above the toilet roll dispenser in one is the stalls "Sociology degrees - please take one". Funny what you remember from all those years ago.

    Invasion of US Capitol building

My point was that Americans often, in their somewhat skewed world view, DO compare Mr Sanders with Stalin. p.s. I'm conscious that there is a least one American reading this and no offence is intended.

    Invasion of US Capitol building

The irony is that in the case of the USA, apart from the loony fringes, the two parties are BOTH to the right of centre compared with European democracies - it's just a matter of degree. You might say the same for the vast majority of Americans. I say this as someone who worked for a very large...

You know the world is moving fast when....

Not at all: it's actually £11.27, SIM only. 4G, 2GB data (never get anywhere near that), unlimited calls and texts. Vodafone. 18mth contract.

    Invasion of US Capitol building

If Trump had not made that rabble-rousing speech those four dead people would be alive this morning.

You know the world is moving fast when....

Pay dearly? I wouldn't call £11.00 a month that dear, especially with WhatsApp allowing me to video chat to my kids and grandkids during lockdown. Back in the 1960s I used to read science fiction stories about being able to do that. I certainly don't walk around with my nose in the phone either...

If it's Virgin Bank that's being referred to, I first received notice of this three months ago. I'm fine with the app. The fingerprint login is very convenient. I can't remember the last time I used the website. (I'm no spring chicken either - I'm 70.)
