    Those were the days

when I was a teenager in the 1960's the covers of the woodworker magazine carried adverts to two machines I salivated over, one was the coronet and the other the Kity. Years later I did manage to buy a coronet major and over time collected all of the attachments. H&S guys look away, ha ha today...

    who are the most reliable

ha ha well that was a can of worms, I noticed parkside seem to be knockoffs of better brands but are they just rebadged? As to old tools I have a wolf aluminium bodied drill from the 1950's that belonged to my father and is still in use. I assume Bosch are still made in Germany and not China or...

    who are the most reliable

Has anyone composed a list from good to worse of powertool manufacturers, so many names appear these days I have never heard of, and reliability is not all about price that is for sure it is about deserved reputation, rather than trading on a name So how about it how would you list your top ten...

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

Now I remember the local bad boy mixing sugar and weedlkiller putting it in a metal tube with a jetex fuse and wedging it in a tree, darn near set fire to the forest when it went off , it split the tree in two. Shotgun licence ten bob from the post office and no age limit.

Mortise machine W. A. Baker & Co, Newport Monmouth

well it is all in bits and since these photos were taken has been wire brushed and everything freed up. I then gave it all one coat of Hammerite. (Buckingham green much nicer than the original blue/grey) Next job is to assemble and give it a second coat where needed as well as sorting the...

    Workshop Elf and Safety

I have realised that one day someone will be in my workshop and have no idea what all the various preparations are in my various containers and SWMBO has long been complaining she cannot find a thing, so I thought it time to start labelling stuff and as I have a lot of various jars have started...

Mortise machine W. A. Baker & Co, Newport Monmouth

the machine came with only one chisel, a 5/16. I wonder who has some of these tucked away in the dark corners of the workshop if so I would be interested in buying them. The machine will end up in Animal rescue centre workshop where I'll use it to make/ repair field gates and cages etc, it keeps...

Mortise machine W. A. Baker & Co, Newport Monmouth

I have just acquired and started a refurb on a brute of a cast iron manual mortise machine produced in Newport Wales by W. A. Baker, I stripped it before I thought about photos. I am guessing it is late 1880's as they became motorised shortly after that. Despite having stood outside in the rain...

    Drummond B lathe

just one word of caution for you, the traverse wheel is different in direction to most lathes thus if you turn it clockwise instead of moving the apron away from the chuck it does in fact wind the tool into the chuck. Most people at some time introduced a intermediate gear to reverse the...
